김.명.민. <불멸의 이순신>으로 작년 KBS 연기대상을 받으며 감동적인 수상소감을 밝혔던 그가, 또다시 제33회 한국방송대상 올해의 방송인상 탤런트 부문을 수상했다. 이를 놓칠세라, Dramatique 편집부는 서둘러 배우 김명민을 만났다. 직접 만나본 그는 어떠했냐고? 멋졌다, 물론. 그리고 세상에! 그 대책 없는 인간미란, 도무지 믿기지 않을 정도였다. 정말 저럴 수가 있나? 아무리 그래도 그렇지. 나르시시즘을 이슬처럼 먹고 산다는 저 배우라는 족속의 일원이! 아니 대체 저렇게도 대책 없이 인간적일 수가 있단 말이냐!
불멸, 했고 불량, 했던 김명민과의 시간
드: 세상에, 뛰어오르는 컷 한 장을 위해서만도 어림잡아 70번은 뛰셨던 것 같아요. 사실 화보 촬영이란 게 배우에게 굉장히 힘든 작업인데 몇 시간 동안 세세한 사항들 다 따라주시고, 한참 숨을 몰아쉬면서도 “운동도 되고 정말 좋습니다!”라고까지 말해주시니… 감동입니다.(웃음) 김명민 씨 같은 톱클래스의 배우가 그러기 진짜 쉽지 않거든요.
김: 아, 아니에요. 제가 최근에 피카소전을 갔다 왔는데, 전 아직 톱클래스니 그렇게 생각해본 적도 없거니와 거기 갔다 와서 더욱 정신 차리게 됐어요. 피카소가 25세 되던 해에 온갖 전시회에, 온갖 상을 다 휩쓸었대요. 그 젊은 나이에 부와 명성에 얻을 수 있는 건 다 얻은 거예요. 그런데도 작품세계를 보면 죽기 전까지도 계속 바뀌고 변화해요. 전 피카소에 대해 잘 몰랐지만, 딱 눈으로 보면서 ‘아 참 대단한 사람이구나’ 느꼈어요. 죽기 전까지도 정체되지 않고 계속 변화해나가는, 그걸 보며 느슨한 마음을 다잡게 됐죠.
드: 그렇지만 한국방송대상에서 또 탤런트 부문을 수상하셨어요. 사실 연기력과 인기, 평가, 모든 면에서 공인받은 최고의 연기자라는 건 부인할 수 없는 사실인데요.
김: 이번 수상은 누가 뉴스에서 보고 얘기해줘서 알았어요. 뉴스에 이름이 오르는 건 기분 좋은 일인 것 같아요. 좋은 일로 오르내리는 거니깐. 둘 중 하나잖아요. 뉴스에 오르내리는 건. 사실 진짜 전 복 받은 놈이에요. 이순신 역할 한 번으로 이거 참…
드: 저희도 기뻤습니다. 드라마를 안 하고 계시니 언제나 뵈려나 하고 있다가, 상 받으시는 거 빌미로 냉큼 인터뷰하게 되었으니.(웃음) 당분간은 영화 촬영에 전념하실 것 같다고 보도가 나오던데, 어떠세요. TV 연기하고 영화 연기라는 거.
김: 연기라는 건 다를 게 없어요. 환경이 다른 것뿐이지. 근데 TV는 아무래도 순발력이 많이 필요한 것 같고, 또 아시다시피 방송에 쫓기며 돌아가니까 제가 뭘 찍었는지 기억 안 날 때도 있어요, 솔직히. 연기에 대한 만족감 같은 걸 잘 모르는 채로, 그냥 가는 거예요.
드: 어느 인터뷰에서, “연기가 기계적으로 몸에 익을까 봐 두렵다”는 말씀도 하셨던데요.
김: 맞아요. 사실 50회 이상은 안 좋은 것 같아요, 뭐든. 연극도 공연을 몇 개월씩 해버리면 나중에는 관객들 자리 앉을 때까지 밖에서 커피 마시고 놀아요, 다들. “20분 있다 시작해요~” 그러면 “어~” 하고 가서는 바로 시작하는 거야. 항상 있는 일이 되어버리는 거죠. 워낙 몇 개월을 같이 연습했으니까 내가 툭 치면, 툭 툭 툭 툭 왔다갔다 기계처럼. 과연 얼마나 느끼고 얼마나 마음속으로 연기하느냐. 이건 아니게 되는 거죠. 이순신 역할도 그런 생각이 든 게 한 50회 정도 갔을 때? 항상 같은 생활의 반복이잖아요. 월화 세트, 나머지 지방… 어느 날 보니까 내가 습관적으로 이순신 장군의 톤을 하고 있다는 느낌이 들더라구요. 그 순간부터 그걸 떨쳐버리려고 해도 잘 안 돼요. 습관적으로 되는 거니까. 또 워낙 대사 양이 많기 때문에 일단 대사 외우는 게 급선무긴 해요. 감정이고 뭐고 일단 대사를 외워야 방송이 나갈 거 아니에요. 그래서 그쪽에 너무 신경을 쓰다 보니 숙련자가 되어버린 거야. 대사 딱 보면 아, 여기서는 소리 한 번 확 지르고, 여기서는 한 호흡 쉬고, 여기서는 뭐 한 번 오른쪽으로 갔다가 등을 돌리고 눈을 지그시 감는다든가. 다 보이는 거예요, 대본을 보면. 남들은 ‘아, 이순신에 완전히 빠져서 그러는 거구나’라고 했지만, 나는 너무 괴로웠어요. 내가 뭘 좀 생각하고 집중해서 해야 하는데 잠을 못 자니까 집중될 리도 없고. 습관처럼 눈 감고 있다가도 슛 소리 들어가면 눈 뜨고 바로 시작해버리는 거죠. 그래도 무리가 없을 정도니 얼마나 녹음기처럼 되어버렸다는 얘기예요. 너무 힘들었어요. 근데 속 모르는 사람들은 날 보고 “이제 젖었구나, 니가” 이러고. 졸다가도 슛 소리만 들리면 딱 하니까 “어~ 넌 이제 몸과 마음 다 장군이 된 거야…”라고.(웃음) 근데 그게 아니었거든요.
드: 배역에 너무 몰입해서 주변 관계에 영향을 줄 정도였다구요.
김: 모든 연기가 쉬운 게 없어요. 이순신은 실존 인물이잖아요. 그걸 또 일개 배우가 재현해내는 거니까 사람들은 날 통해서 한 번도 본 적 없는 이순신 장군의 모습을 느낄 것이고, 내가 그런 영향을 끼치는 사람이라고 생각하니 몸가짐 하나하나가 너무 중요한 게 되어버린 거예요. 어디 가서 말을 하더라도 망언할 수 없는 것이고, 태도 하나라도 경박하게 할 수 없는 것이고… 특히 촬영장에서는 더했어요. 다들 갑옷 입고 농담 주고받는데 나는 그게 잘 안 되는 거야. 이순신이잖아요. 농담하다가 갑자기 막 슬픈, 비장한 상황들, 백만 왜군이 몰려오고 어떻게 싸울 것이냐 고뇌하고 이런 걸 할 수가 없어요, 저는. 몰입도 잘 안 되구요. 그래서 항상 촬영장 가면 대본 보면서 혼자 있는 시간이 많았어요. 가만있으면 주변에서 사람들이 말 시키니까. “너 뭐 안 좋은 일 있니?” 이런 거 자체가 너무 신경 쓰이고 어떨 때는 짜증이 날 때가 있어요. 아니 오늘 찍는 신이 옥고를 치러야 하고, 백성들을 위해서 무얼 해야 하고, 임금 앞에서 부딪히고 이런 신이데 당연히 마음이 숙연해져야 하고 해서 집중을 좀 하려고 하면 옆에서 “왜 그래? 말 좀 해…” 하니까. <소름> 때도 마찬가지였거든요.
드: ‘주변 관계에 영향’이라는 게 그런 점에서 비롯된 거군요?
김: 그렇죠. <소름>의 용현이라는 놈은 밑바닥부터 우울한 놈이라 뭐 즐거울 생각이 저언혀 안 나요. 일단, 내일 찍을 대본을 보잖아요? 왜 사람이 책을 읽어도, 누구나 마찬가지로 그 인물의 감정을 따라가잖아요. 배우도 그래요. 한 가지 생각만 하면 전부 그쪽으로 가게 되는 거죠. 저 물건이 너무 사고 싶으면 꿈에서도 나타나잖아요. 정말 사고 싶다, 정말 사고 싶은데, 어떻게 해서든지 사야겠는데 하잖아요. 해야 할 일이 있으면 딴 게 손에 안 잡히는 거랑 똑같이 내가 이놈 생각을 하다 보면 이 암울한 놈이 또 어디 가서 무슨 짓을 할까 다 생각하고, 내일 가서 연기해야 할 부분 생각하고 이러면 아무리 누가 웃긴 얘기해도 억지 표정밖에 안 되거든요. 마음 편하게 타악 터놓고 웃을 수 없는 거예요. 그런 생활을 한 6, 7개월 하다 보니까 사람 자체가 황폐해진다고 할까. 밝은 생각이 안 나요. 이게 정신병이 오면 이런 식으로 오는 거구나 싶더라구요.
드: 몸이 축날 정도로…
김: 실제로 얼굴에 드러날 정도였어요. 그때 제가 결혼 전이었는데 집사람이 날 만나면 말도 없어지고 자꾸 이상해지니까 그런 얘길 했었어요, 그때.
드: 그래서인지 김명민 씨 연기에 깊이가 있어요. 왜, 어떤 분은 정말 비장한 역할 잘하면서도 컷 떨어지면 그렇게 농담 잘하고 잘 놀고 또 그러다가 슛 들어가면 휙 바뀌고. 그것도 물론 능력이다 싶은데, 솔직히 저는 그 타입보다는 김명민 씨 연기가 와 닿아요.
김: 근데 저는 부러워요, 그런 배우들이. 그건 몰입력이겠죠. 농담 따먹기 하다가도 갑자기 슬픈 표정 딱 짓고. 나는 밥도 잘 못 먹거든요. 그런 신 있으면 내도록 그 생각하면서 그냥 하루가 가요. 아침 촬영이면 그 전날 잠도 잘 못자. 아- 그러면서 촬영장에 가는데, 저는 그런 타입이니까 막 울다가도 컷 딱 마무리하면 씩 웃으면서 “어땠어요?” 하는 사람들 존경스럽죠. 그런 게 필요한 것 같아요. 그러면 제가 덜 힘들 것 같으니까.
드: 대신 김명민 씨의 그런 점이 어떤 신뢰나 믿음으로 시청자들에게 다가온 부분도 크죠. 그렇지만 마이너스일 수도 있겠어요. 이를테면 <소름>의 어두운 이미지가 너무 각인되어 손해를 본 것 같다든가 그런 생각은 든 적 없으세요?
김: 근데 저는 이렇게 생각해요. 저는 어… 배우가 이미지 변신한다는 이런 말조차도 좀 웃긴 말인 것 같구요. 어차피 배우는, 어떻게 보면 껍데기인 거죠. 이 사람 저 사람, 칩을 딱 끼우면 또 딴 사람이 되고, 여러 사람을 받아들이기 위해 항상 열려 있어야 되고. 그런 면에서 ‘이미지 변신’이란 말은 합당치 않은 것 같고, 배우라면 당연히 이 인물을 할 때면 이 인물로, 저 역할을 하면 또 저 역할로 보여야 한다고 생각해요. 이미지가 굳어진다느니 하는 건 주변에서 항상 떠도는 기우에 불과한 거죠. 제가 뭘 해도 떠도는 얘기들. 이순신만 해도, 처음 시작할 때 “쟤는 현대극만 했던 애고 이순신 역에 안 어울린다. 얼굴도 사극에 안 어울리는 얼굴이다”라고 했어요. 누가 제 얼굴이 이순신이랑 닮아서 캐스팅했다고 얘길 했겠어요. 이순신답다는 얘기는 이순신이 완전히 끝난 다음에 나온 얘기들이에요. “김명민, 이순신 장군이랑 똑같이 생겨서 캐스팅했다” 이런 얘기들. 실상은 제가 사극에는 정말 안 어울리는 사람이라고 해서 반대하는 사람들이 굉장히 많았어요.
드: 이순신 다음이 또 달건이, 즉 건달 역이었어요. <불멸의 이순신>도 물론이지만, 사실 <불량가족>에서 김명민 씨의 연기력을 더욱 확실하게 느꼈어요. 일단 <불량가족>을 보면 달건이라는 캐릭터에 대한 해석이, 보통 흔한 불량배 연기하고는 다르더라구요.
김: 해석이라고 거창하게 말하긴 그렇지만, 정말 하고 싶지 않았어요. 겉으로 보이는 불량기, 겉멋 든 연기는요. ‘나 불량배다’라고 내세우고 다니는 사람들 너무 유치하잖아요. 보통은 불량배지만 사실 안으로 뭔가 곪고 있고 겉으로는 안 무식해 보이려고 하죠. 안 무식해 보이려고 애쓰고 그러던 중 탁 터져서 사건 나고 그러거든요. 처음에는 욕도 많이 하는 캐릭터였는데, 제가 욕은 빼고 해보자고 의견을 냈어요. 불량배가 욕하는 거 너무 상투적이지 않은가, 말도 제법 조리 있게 하자. 그럼에도 불량배면 되는 거 아니냐.
드: 아까 연기 변신이라는 말 자체가 뭐랄까 어불성설이라고도 하셨는데, 그래도 신경은 쓰이셨을 듯해요. <이순신>에서 <불량가족>으로 넘어오는 것, 어떻게 보면 극단적인데요.
김: 그러니깐 다들 그랬죠. “너는 이순신의 이미지가 굳어졌기 때문에 앞으로 그 이미지 벗는 데 힘들 것이다” 그러면서 그 예를 다 들어주더라구요. 너무 젖어버려서 그 톤으로 또 다음 드라마를 연기하고 그런 케이스. 제가 제일 싫은 게 뭐냐면, 연기에서 김명민이 보이는 거예요. 김명민 이름 석 자 기억 못해도 좋다, 인물로만 기억해다오, 전 그 주의인데… 사실 친구들 중에서 적나라하게 연기 모니터를 해주는 애들이 열 명 정도 있어요.
드: 적나라하다면?
김: 칭찬 거의 없어요. 그냥 무조건 까대요. 드라마 딱 끝나면 친구들이랑 통화를 한 번씩 싹 해요. 아, 정말 적나라하죠. 뭐 통화를 못하면 메일로 하고. 진짜 창피도 많이 당해요. 정말, 수화기 집어던지고 싶을 때도 많아요.(웃음)
드: 예를 들면 어느 정도?
김: 그 뭐… “야, 니가 뭐라도 되냐? 거기서 폼 잡으면 어떡하냐?”도 있고, “그 장면에선 김명민이었어” 이런 얘기들. 그 말이 제일 기분 나빠요. 김명민이었다는 거. 그러니깐 연기란 건 어쩌면 관객을 속이는 거잖아요. 내가 김명민으로서는 평상시에 이렇게 얘길 하지만, 달건이면 뭐 이렇게 얘길 할 수도 있고, 어쨌든 최대한 내 본모습을 숨긴 채 보여줘야 되는데 그게 드러난 거니까… 근데 사실 시청자분들에겐 아닐 수도 있어요. 왜냐하면 제 본모습을 모르기 때문에. 그런데 친구들은 잘 알잖아요. 그렇다면 어쩌면 걔네들 모니터링이 모순일 수도 있어요. 자꾸 다르게 생각하려 해도 자기들이 너무 잘 아는 놈이니깐. 왜 우리 가족이 어디 나가서 뭘 하고 있으면 그냥 다 어색한 그런 감정 있잖아요. 그럴 수도 있는데, 근데 전 이제 그것조차도 싫은 거지. 친구 놈들조차도 속이고 싶은 거야. 뭐, 때로는 칭찬받을 때도 있어요. 주로 까긴 하지만 칭찬도 있긴 있어요. 인색한 놈들이지만요.(웃음) 어쨌든 <불량가족> 선택은 잘했다고들 나중에 얘기해주더라구요.
드: 저도 감탄했어요. 이순신 김명민이 이렇게 자연스럽게 달건이로 흘러가는구나.
김: 저도 그 얘길 너무 많이 들어가지구… 사실 저는 그렇게 생각해본 적이 한 번도 없었거든요, 지금까지. 나는 내가 어떤 이미지로 굳는다는 것에 대한 걱정을 해본 적이 한 번도 없어요. 물론 그런 케이스도 있다는 걸 알긴 하는데, ‘알고 있으니깐 방법을 찾으면 되겠지’라고 생각했죠. 주변에서 뭐 말들이 많았어요. “너는 영화를 해라. 뭐 아예 사극을 한 편 더 해라. 차라리 멜로를 해라” 말들이 너무 많은 거예요. 거기에 “너무 갑작스럽게 변하면 안 된다. 부작용이 온다. 너를 이순신으로 생각하고 있기 때문에 갑자기 뒤엎으면 큰일 난다. 천천히, 꾸준히 엎어라. 그리고 지금은 뭘 해도 이순신 같아서 어색하다” 등등. 근데 그걸 곰곰이 생각해보니깐 언젠가 한 번은 엎어야 될 것 같더라구요. 언젠가 한 번은. 그런데 서서히 엎는 것보단 확실하게 한 번 엎는 게, 그러면 사람들은 눈에 보이는 걸 볼 것이고, 나는 그만큼 이순신의 모습이 안 보이게 연기를 하면 되지 않나. 모르는 사람들이 “에이 쟤는 그래도 이순신이네” 이러고 본다면 어쩔 수 없어요. 그렇지만 적어도 몇 회를 거쳐가면서 드라마 스토리를 따라와준다면 괜찮을 거라는 자신감 같은 게 있었어요.
드: 음, 배우들 보면 아무래도, 세상이 자기중심으로 돌아간다든지, 뭐가 됐든 싫은 소리는 꺼내기 힘들게 만드는 타입이 꽤 많더라구요. 해서 매니저든 친구든 잘생겼다 이쁘다 소리 하는 사람들만 곁에 두는 경우도 꽤 있던데, 김명민 씨는 아닌 것 같아요.
김: 저는 일단 잘생기지도 않았고 이쁘지도 않고, 그러니깐 뭐 당연히… (매니저에게) 안 그러냐? 근데 진짜 잘생긴 사람들은 ‘잘생겼다’ 뭐 그런 칭찬 좋아할 것 같아요. “형 너무 멋지잖아요!” 뭐 이런 얘기하면 (으쓱) “어 그러냐?” 하면서.(일동 웃음) 그래요, 진짜 잘생긴 사람한테 잘생겼다는 얘기 자꾸 해주면 진짜 좋아하거든요. 동시에 예쁜 사람한테 예쁘단 얘기해주면 정말 좋아해요.
드: 어… 왜 그럴까요? 많이 들을 텐데 또 들어도 좋아하는 건.
김: 항상 듣는데도 확인하고 싶어지는 거죠, 자꾸만.
드: 그럼 김명민 씨는 어떠세요? 잘생겼다 이런 얘기 들으면?
김: …장난하나? 뭐 이런…(일동 웃음) 세월이 좋아져서 저 같은 사람도 이제 빛을 보는 거죠. 어, 예전에 방송국 들어갈 때는 정말 깜깜했어요. 주변이 다 꽃미남밖에 없었기 땜에…
드: 맞아요. 한땐 정우성이나 장동건, 그보다 못하다 해도 딱 그 비슷하게 생긴 타입들만 뽑히고 TV 나오고 그랬죠.
김: 네, 근데 저는 그때도 그 생각을 하긴 했어요. 뭐냐면 좀 다른 사람들이 빛을 볼 수 있는 때가 분명 온다는 거. 학교 다닐 때 연기는 보통이지만 되게 잘생긴 친구가 있었고, 또 비슷한 연기력에 평범한 친구가 있었어요. 사실 에너지나 연기력은 별 차이가 안 나는데, 얘네를 딱 분장시켜 무대에 올려놓으면 잘생긴 녀석보다 평범한 애가 훨씬 부각이 되는 거예요. 왜 백지에다 그림을 그리면 그림이 선명하게 잘 보이는데, 무늬가 화려하게 있는 종이에 그림을 그리면 잘 안 보이잖아요. 그 이치인 것 같더라구요. 그러니깐 워낙 잘생겨서 갖고 있는 곱상하고 이쁜 칼라가 선명하기 때문에, 역할에 맞는 느낌이 안 나오는구나… 해서 그런 생각을 하긴 했어요. 분명히 나 같은 놈도 언젠가는 때가 온다.
그 생각을 또 한 번 하게 된 게 <임꺽정> 촬영을 갔던 96년도. 동기들이랑 다 같이 단역이었는데 아마 산적 3 정도 했을 거예요, 제가. 그때 붙어 다니던 잘생긴 녀석들이랑 다 같이 산적 1, 2, 3 해가지구 갔지. 근데 분장하니까 나만 산적이더라구요.(일동 웃음) 진짜 놀랬어요. 어, 뭐 내가 봐도 진짜 산적 같아. 그런데 애들을 딱 보니깐 얘는 산적이 아니야~ 정말 이쁘게 생긴 거예요. ‘야, 너는 뭘 해놔도 잘생겼다’면서 앉아 있는데, 아니나 다를까 감독님이 딱 보더니 “산적 3, 너 나와” 이러면서 나를 대사 시키는 거야.(웃음) 그런 데서 제가 조금씩 희망을 갖기 시작한 거죠. 사실 배우는 뭘 해놓으면 그 사람 같이 보여야 되거든요. 절대 자기 같으면 안 돼요. 나는 쫌 그 사람 같다, 나는 희망이 있다 그랬죠.
드: 근데 진짜 그런 시대가 왔잖아요.
김: 근데 그게, 이렇게 생긴 사람들이 하도 또 판치다 보면 다시 돌아와요, 잘생긴 사람들 시대가. 왜냐면 또 질리기 땜에…(웃음)
드: 그렇게 되어도 김명민 씨는 이쪽저쪽 다 붙을 수 있을 것 같은데요?(웃음)
김: 아…
드: 잘생긴 쪽에도 붙을 수 있고, 아닌 쪽에도…(일동 웃음)
김: 아~ 벅차요. 잘생긴 것은 흉내 낸다고 되는 게 아니잖아요!(웃음)
드: 아니, 진심입니다…! 화보 촬영할 때 깜짝 놀랐어요. 그렇게 클래식한 한편으로 사치스러운 모습은 처음 뵌 거 같은데, 진짜 멋있었다구요.(웃음) 트렌디드라마의 재벌 2세 같기도 하고. 그러고 보니 그런 역할도 관심 있으세요? 예를 들면 삼식이라든지.
김: 아, 네, 네.
드: 좀 거만하고 그렇지만 속은 착하고. 김명민 씨가 하면 정말 다른 컬러가 나올 것 같은데.
김: 네, 그런 역할 좋아요. 재밌을 같아요. 도도해 보이는데 알고 보면 허점 많고… 코미디가 섞인. 그게 그런 캐릭터의 매력이잖아요.
드: 그럼 뜻이 있으시다는 거죠?
김: 그렇죠. 멋지잖아~!(웃음) 폼 나잖아요.
드: 작품성 있는 작품도 좋지만 가끔은 이런 드라마도 재밌죠. 우리나라는 너무 이것만 쏟아져 나와서 탈이지만요. 삼순이 예가 있듯, 그런 역할이라고 꼭 작품이 나쁘란 법도 없구요.
김: 2년 동안 산속에서 고생했으면 이젠 좀 나가야죠. 죽어라 산속에서 고생했는데 좀 럭셔리하게…(웃음) 웬만하면 당분간은 산, 바다, 이런 데 좀 피하고 싶어요. 수염 뭐 이런 거. 아, 정말 화장실 갈 데가 없어 가지구, 세상에 그 고통 모르실 거예요. 그런 역할 해보고 싶죠. 재밌을 것 같아요. 사실 <불량가족> 끝나고 계속 그와 비슷한 코미디만 들어왔거든요.
드: 대본 들어오는 게 그런가 보더라구요? 손창민 씨도 <불량주부> 끝나자 아니나 다를까 그런 배역만 계속 들어왔다고 하시던데.
김: 네, 뭐. 딱 보이는 것만 봐주니까… 전 좀 밝은 배역을 해보고 싶은 게, 사실 여태까지의 배역은 다 제 성격이랑은 안 맞았던, 너무 동떨어진 것들이었어요.
드: 본래 성격은 밝고 털털하고 그러신가 봐요.
김: 네, 농담하는 것 좋아하고.
드: 그러면서 또한 예민한 구석도 많으시구요. (“네”) 하지만 남한테 까탈 부리고 그런 식의 예민함은 아니고.
김: 그렇죠, 제가 해야 될 부분들에 대해서 예민한 거지, 사람들한테 그럴 필요는 없는 거죠.
드: 그런 성격 있어요. 사람들한텐 좀 너그럽고, 자기 자신한테는 되게 예민하고 객관적이고.
김: 네, 맞아요, 맞아요. 제가 그래요. 좀 심해요. 그러니깐 스스로 뭘 좀 실수를 하고 그러면 막 미쳐버리죠.
드: 그러니깐 친구들이 막말로 충고해줄 수 있는 거네요. 보통은 반대거든요, 사람들이.
김: 근데 그래야 되는 것 같아요. 나 자신한테는 굉장히 냉정해야 되고, 다른 사람들한텐 너그럽게 여유가 있어야 되고.
드: 그렇게 사는 게 가끔은 손해 본단 느낌이 들 때도 있거든요. 그런 건 없나요?
김: 그런 건 없는데요.
드: 이를테면 저 같은 경우는, 친구들이 나에 대해 비판하는 것을 잘 받아들이는 편이에요. 왜, 넌 이런 점이 나쁘다 그러는데 거기다 대고 발끈하고 그러면 좀 웃기잖아요.
김: 맞아요, 그렇죠.
드: 그럴 때마다 ‘그런 면 있어, 내가, 고쳐야 돼’ 뭐 이러다 보니깐, 간혹 인간들이(웃음) 좀 너무 나간다 싶을 때도 있거든요. 그런 화제를 별 생각도 없이 쉽게 꺼내고.
김: 아, 맞아요. 그럴 때 있어요. 저 같은 경우 그럴 땐 수용하지 않아요. 그러니깐 문제점을 녀석이 딱 정확하게 찍어서 이야기해줄 때, 정말 내가 몰랐던 걸 집어낼 때 그러면 전 진짜 “고맙다. 무릎을 꿇는다” 그러죠. 그런데 제가 어떤, 연기를 예로 들면 뭘 속이기 위한 설정으로 사용한 건데 그걸 겉으로 드러난 것만 보고 지적할 때, 그러면 “넌 드라마를 더 봐”, “넌 드라마를 겉으로만 봤어” 이렇게 반격을 하죠.
예전에 그런 경우가 있었어요. <불멸의 이순신>을 하는데, 제가 회의할 때나 탁자에 앉을 때 한쪽 팔을 이렇게 좀 빼고 얘기하는 신들이 많았어요. 그러니까 아는 녀석 중 하나가 “자세가 비뚤다, 장군이 위엄이 있어야 하는데 너무 안 좋아 보인다” 그러더라구요. 그래서 제가 녀석한테 처음부터 다 돌려서 보라고 그랬어요. 근데 우리 팬들 중에 열성팬들―몇 번 씩 돌려보고 모니터하는 사람들―중 한 명이 그 얘기를 쓴 거 보고 깜짝 놀랐어요. 전 아무도 모를 줄 알았거든요. 제가 그런 자세를 취한 게 60회 이상부터예요. 즉 어깨에 총상을 당하는 신. 총을 맞고 나서 이제 어깨가 안 좋고 몸이 안 좋아지니까 그때부터 제가 설정으로 들어간 거였어요. 감독님도 모르시고 다 모르죠. 뭐 저만 가는 거죠. 저만 그냥 이렇게 살짝 표현하면서 가는 건데, 그걸 생각해준 사람이 열성팬 중에 있었던 거죠.
드: 정말 반가웠겠어요.
김: 매니저한테 이야기하고, 박수 치고 그랬어요. 정말 대단하다구.
드: 그런 설정이나 디테일은, 특히 TV 연기에서 힘들잖아요.
김: 그렇긴 한데, 어쩌면 당연할 수도 있죠. 저는 제 몸이니깐. 총 맞은 건 다른 사람들은 잊어버릴 수 있지만 난 기억하잖아요. 그러니깐 난 할 수 있는 거지, 다른 사람들은 모를 수밖에요. TV 연기는 일정 등의 환경상, 놓치고 가는 부분이 많을 수밖에 없어요. 그러니까 사실상, 배우 몫인 거죠. 감독이 그런 디테일까지 결코 챙겨줄 수 없고, 본인이 해야 돼요.
드: 어렸을 때부터 배우감이었다는 왜, 그 얘기가 딱 생각나네요. 유치원에서 춤추는데 정전된 줄도 모르고 혼자만 계속 춤추고 계셨다는 이야기요. 훌륭한 배우의 위인전 같은 걸 쓴다면 딱 유년기 에피소드로 들어갈 법한. 타고나신 거네요?
김: 흠, 모르겠어요. 글쎄 그때는 왜 그랬는지. 그러니깐 춤을 잘 춰야 된다는 생각밖엔 없었으니깐요. 이게 딴 생각은 안 나고 이 춤을 내가 잘~ 춰야 된다. 이제 음악이 나오고 있고, 그 생각… 딱 그것뿐이었던 것 같아요. 별게 아니구요.
드: (이구동성) 그게 바로 타고난 거잖아요. 보통 연기 안 할 때는 뭐 하시나요.
김: 등산 좋아하고 산 뛰고, 음… 그리고 애기랑 같이 보내는 시간이 많아요, 거의.
드: 여자들이 김명민 씨를 좋아하는 건, 한 여자만 좋아할 것 같고 좋은 아빠일 것 같고, 그런 것이 커요. 10대 때도 여자들 기웃거리고 그런 스타일은 아니셨을 것 같아요.(웃음)
김: 네, 뭐 그렇게 그쪽으로는… 물론 노는 건 좋아했지만. 사실 그런 남자들도 있긴 있어요. 하루라도 여자 없으면 못 산다는. 저는 진짜 이해가 안 됐어요. 정말 사람이란 게 때로는 남자가 옆에 필요할 때도 있고, 또 혼자 있는 시간이 필요할 때도 많거든요. 저는 혼자 있는 시간을 많이 필요로 했던 거 같아요. 와이프가 있기 전에는 혼자 있는 시간을 좀 즐겼달까. 그리고 일단 내 몸을 좀 심하게 굴려보는 게… 고생을 시켜봐야지만 뭐랄까 그런, 허무한 기간들 있죠. 방송국 공채라고 단역 하고, 내내 일이 없고, 그런 허무한 시간들이 메워질 수 있을 것 같더라구요. 그래서 운동을 굉장히 열심히 했어요. 그래야만 그 시간들이 나중에 보상받을 수 있을 거란 생각에서요. 고생을 하고, 이렇게 나 혼자만의 시간을 갖고, 생각하고 느꼈던 것들을 또 적어놓구… 그런 것들이 나중에 잘됐을 때 혹은 잘되려 하는데 내 다리를 뭔가가 붙잡았을 때, 이겨낼 수 있는 힘이 될 것이라는 생각들. 길 가다 불쑥 캐스팅되고 성공한 사람들은 그러다 발목 탁 잡으면 엎어지거든요. 그런데 저처럼 잡초같이(웃음) 자란 놈들은 밟혀도 ‘뭐 그냥 그래’ 그러면서 넘어가지 어떻게 되진 않거든요.
드: 넘어질 만한 일을 애초에 만들지 않는 지혜도 생겨날 테구요. 그 과정 속에서.
김: 그렇죠. 점점 능구렁이가 되어가는 거죠, 뭐.(웃음)
드: (웃음) 좀 그렇게 된 것 같으세요, 스스로가?
김: 예, 뭐 꽤… 되어버렸어요.(웃음)
드: 이건 여담인데요, ‘지진희 씨, 파이팅’의 충격은 극복되셨나요?(웃음)
김: 앗, 누가 얘기해줬어요?(웃음)
드: 어딘가 검색하다 보니깐 나오더라구요. 한참 동안 격려해주시던 아주머니들이 헤어질 때가 되자 “지진희 씨, 파이팅!”
김: 진짜요? 나 그 얘기 잘 안 하는데.(웃음) 아~ 맞아. 한 번 얘기했나? 어디서 얘기했지?
드: 기사 나온 거 보고 김명민이란 사람 참 털털하구나, 했어요. 아니 이런 얘기를…(웃음)
김: 정말 충격이었죠. 상투 벗어서 던지고 싶었어요.(일동 웃음) 그전에 제가, 싸우는 건 몇 번 봤거든요. “지진희야? 김승우야?” 이런 거. 예전에 그런 적도 있어요. 이동 중에 어디 건물에 들르려고 차가 섰어. 이제 내려야 되는데 밖에서 누구 한 명이 “김승우야!” 이러는 거예요. 아, 그 얘기 들으니깐 못 내리겠는 거예요. 제가. “어?” 이러면서 자세를 낮췄는데, 갑자기 고등학생들이 와~ 나오더니 개떼같이 몰려든 거야.(웃음) “김승우야! 김승우! 차에 김승우! 와~” 그게 2001년인가? 결국 못 내렸어요. 그리고 자세를 최대한 낮춰가지고 뭐 책이나 이런 걸로 얼굴 가리고 “빨리 가자” 해서 간 일이 있었어요.
드: (웃음)곤란하셨겠네요, 진짜.
김: 난 내릴 수도 있었지만 그 사람들 실망할까봐.(웃음)
드: 그리고 매력적인 유부남 스타 5위!(웃음)
김: 요즘 제 뉴스가 없어서…(웃음) 김명민 치면 항상 그 기사 나온다고, 친구 녀석들이 또 뭐라 뭐라 해요. “기사 거리 좀 만들어라. 인터뷰를 하든가. 야, 맨날 그 기사 똑같이 뜨고 감우성 씨 사진 나오고(1위)” 그런다며…
드: (웃음)이젠 수상 소식이랑 영화 <천개의 혀>도 나오더라구요. 의사 역이죠?
김: 네, 그 시나리오를 제가 <불량가족> 들어가기 전에 봤었어요. 그때는 거절했는데, 끝난 후에 운 좋게 또 받게 되었어요. 한데 그때보다 더 퍼펙트하게 시나리오가 와가지구, 또 남아 있는 의사 역이 아주 좋아서 하게 됐죠.
드: 굳이 영화 연기만 고집하겠다든지 이런 건 없으시죠?
김: 물론이죠. 중요한 건 배역이죠.
드: 나이가 들었을 때 되고 싶은 배우는 어떤 사람인가요? 누구를 예로 들어주셔도 되고.
김: 누구나 말하지만 저는 워낙 옛날부터 좋아했던 로버트 드 니로.
드: 남자 배우들이 누구나 이야기하는 배우가 두 명 있잖아요. 드 니로랑…
김: (웃음)알 파치노요?
드: 대부분 둘 중 하난데.
김: 저는 로버트 드 니로.(웃음)
드: 두 사람 타입이 완전히 다르잖아요. 둘 중 누구냐에 따라 성향이 좀 나누어지죠.
김: 로버트 드 니로는 영화마다 항상 바뀌니깐, 딴 사람이니깐 그게 젤 맘에 들고, 알 파치노는 좋은 배우지만 항상 알 파치노 같아요.
드: 그것도 참 대단한 능력이기도 한데, 그래도 드 니로한테…
김: 그렇죠. 저는 드 니로예요. 나중에 나이 들어 주인공을 못하더라도, 물론 할리우드에선 나이 든 배우도 주인공 하지만- 그럼에도 로버트 드 니로는 본인이 필요한 역할이 있다면, 역할을 보고 조연이든 혹은 작은 역할이든 정말 많이 하거든요. 그런 거 보면 참 대단한 것 같아요. 잠시 나와서도 극을 확 살려주죠. ‘쟤는 조연배우라서 조연을 하는 거야’가 아니잖아요. 드 니로 보고 누가 조연배우라 해요. 그렇지만 본인이 그걸 한단 말이죠. 그건 뭐 자기 욕심보다는 영화에 대한 사랑이라고 할 수도 있겠고, 관객에 대한 보답이라든가 베푸는 마음 그런 것인 듯도 해요. 저도 나중에 저를 필요로 해서 풍성해지는 곳이 있다면 단편영화, 왜 돈 없이 찍는 분들 있잖아요. 그분들과도 찍고 싶어요. 나이 들면서 그런 배우가 되어갈 수 있다면 더할 나위 없죠.
김명민에 대해 더 긴 말이 필요하랴.
‘그와 친구가 되고 싶습니다!’ 이 한 문장이면 충분하지 않은가?
워낙에 배우의 이미지가 강해서인지, 조금은 무겁고 지나치게 진지한 사람일 거라고 예상했던 김명민에 대한 내 선입견은 순식간에 날아가 버렸다. 한심하게도, 눈에 보이는 것만 보았던 셈이다. 그는 트렌디한 멜로드라마에서 ‘남주 1’을 맡아 뭍 여성들의 로망이 되기에도 충분한 그야말로 멋진 남자였고(정말, 배우란 갖가지 칩을 부착할 때마다 각기 다른 사람이 되어야 한다는 그의 비유는 너무나 적절했다. 약간의 스타일링에 표정만 바뀌어도 그는 어쩐지 다른 사람처럼 보이는 것이다), 또한 거칠다면 거칠기로 소문난 저 연예계라는 구역에서 정말로 10년씩이나 생활해오긴 한 건지 상상이 안 갈 만큼 소탈하고 인간적이었다. 허세도, 자만도, 거품도, (배우들에게) 그 흔한 과잉의 나르시시즘도 찾아보지 못했다. 더 긴말이 필요하랴. ‘그와 친구가 되고 싶습니다!’ 이 한 문장이면 충분하지 않은가? 이름처럼 명민하고, 또 예민하며, 그럼에도 따뜻한 이 남자. 도대체 이보다 더 좋을 수 있겠는가? /박현정

Kim Myung-min who received a prize at the KBS Drama Awards last year for his role in with an impressive acceptance speech won a prize for TV talent again at the 33rd Korea Broadcasting Awards this year. The editorial staff of Dramatique quickly seized the event to meet the actor. If you ask us what kind of a man he is, we have got to say he is a decent man. Really so. And, his humanity was incredibly impressive. His human aspects are so admirable that it was not easy for us to believe he was also one of those actors who live every day on a diet of egoistic narcissism.
Time with Kim Myung-min who has been both immortal and immoral
Park: Surprisingly, it seems you tried at least 70 times to shoot a scene of jumping up. In fact, pictorial photographing is a very difficult work for actors. But, you followed all the directions and detailed processes for the scene over several hours saying “It is really good for me as it gives me a workout!” instead of complaining about it. It is very moving indeed.(laughs) It’s not so easy for a top class actor like you to behave like this.
Kim: No, it isn’t. Recently I went to an exhibition of Picasso’s works and I got more aware of myself. Already before this experience, I had never considered myself a top class star. Picasso held all kinds of exhibitions and was awarded all sorts of prizes at the age of 25. He obtained all possible wealth and fame at the early stages of his life. However, he always made every effort to seek after his own way in his works till the last moment of his life. Though I didn’t know about him, I felt he had been ‘a really great man’ just by looking at his works. I could brace myself for the future seeing his continuous efforts that had lasted till his death.
Park: But, you again received a prize for TV talent at the Korea Broadcasting Awards. It means obviously you are the best actor whose acting ability, popularity and etc. are recognized officially.
Kim: I heard about the nomination from a person who had learned it through TV news. To see one’s own name in news articles seems like a good thing. TV news treats good things or bad things. And, it was a good report. I’m a really fortunate guy. After having played just the role of Lee Soon-shin, I became a lucky guy……
Park: We were pleased at the news, too. As you were not working for TV drama, we were waiting for a good chance to interview you on the pretext of congratulating you on your winning the prize.(laughs) There was a report that you would be exclusively engaged in movie shooting for the time being. What do you think about the difference between TV dramas and movies?
Kim: There is not any basic difference between them, only the circumstances are different. It seems you need much ability to react instantly for TV dramas. And, as you know, sometimes I don’t remember what program I’ve played with such busy broadcasting schedules. To be honest, I play roles for TV programs, but I often do so without any feeling of satisfaction.
Park: I know also you said in an interview you were afraid of playing mechanically.
Kim: Yes I did. Whatever the case, dramas or movies or otherwise, anything with more than 50 installments seems undesirable. The same is true for theater. When same plays go on for several months, actors behave as they want, drinking coffee till all spectators are seated. Although actors are told “the play is beginning in 20 minutes,” they do what they want after only nodding their heads. For them, the plays become just a routine. As they have worked together for several months, they know already how to play like machines not being totally engaged in their roles. In a word, there is hardly any profound feeling in their performance. It was maybe from the 50th installment that I felt the same thing playing the role of Lee Soon-shin. The same daily rhythm repeated always while I was playing on drama sets every Monday and Tuesday and I was frequenting other localities for other schedules. One day, I found myself behaving like General Lee Soon-shin habitually. From that moment, I tried to discard the habit, but it was not so easy. It was because the habit had been fixed strongly. Also the fact that there is a good quantity of lines to memorize is a problem to resolve. So, it means I must learn the lines by heart first for the broadcasting before thinking about the feelings and other things. As a consequence, it’s now second nature to me. It is enough for me to have a look at the lines to know what to do and how to do it for every scene. I was really distressed when others said “he is doing so as he is totally absorbed in the role of Lee Soon-shin.” I didn’t sleep so well that I couldn’t concentrate on my work. But, I was always ready to begin playing my role habitually also when I closed eyes to take a rest. I could manage to play my part without any big problem, which means I had gotten accustomed to my work like a recording machine. It was a very hard time for me. Despite it all, those people who didn’t understand me said to me, “you are wholly absorbed in your role now, you are!” It was natural for them to say so because I rushed to begin my role at once even while drowsing. They said to me also, “now you are the General in all senses.”(laughs) But, unfortunately it was not true.
Park: I heard you were so much immersed in your role that your relationships with others were influenced by it.
Kim: No role is easy to play. Lee Soon-shin is a figure that had really existed. People imagine the figure of General Lee Soon-shin who they have never seen before watching my reproduction of him. I thought I had such a big effect on them. Since then, all my behavior began to count for much. So, wherever I went, I tried not to make absurd remarks and to behave prudently in everything. Especially, at the studios. All others were clad in armor and were joking together. But, it was difficult for me to do so. It was just because I was Lee Soon-shin. I couldn’t begin to play sad and pathetic character just after stopping joking. I didn’t know how to confront Japanese forces, either, when they rushed on me in countless number. Besides, I couldn’t immerse myself in my role. So, I spent much time on reading the lines alone all the time when staying at the studios. People came to me seeing me staying alone to ask me, “What’s wrong with you?” This kind of things got on my nerves and annoyed me from time to time. I was feeling so because of those who approached to me just to say, “Is there something wrong with you? Please, tell me something……” when I was trying to concentrate on my role to prepare for the scenes in which I was to be a prisoner, to do what I could for my people and to be bumped against my will in front of the king. I experienced the same thing when I was working for the .
Park: So, it was for this reason that ‘your relationships with others were influenced.’
Kim: Yes, you’re right. The character Yong-hyun of is deeply melancholy. So, this guy is always depressed. Like people follow the feelings of the figures in the books while reading them, so is the case of the actors who read the lines for the scenes of the next day. Once you think about a thing, all of yourself tends toward it. When you really want to buy a thing, you see it in your dreams, too. Later, you come to think of buying it at any cost. When you have something to do, you can’t get into other things. When I think about this guy, about where this gloomy guy will go and what he will do and about the parts to shoot tomorrow, no funny story can really make me laugh. I am in no mood to laugh and feel at ease. After about 6 to 7 months of such life, man itself gets dried-up. All thoughts are gloomy. All of a sudden, I understood that any psychosis could begin in this way.
Park: To the extent that you lost some weight……
Kim: Everybody could know it just seeing my face. It was a little before my marriage, and my wife would talk about it as I didn’t speak much and looked strange.
Park: It’s maybe because of it that I feel there is something profound in your playing. There are some actors who can easily begin to joke after pathetic scenes and vice versa. It can, of course, be understood as a kind of ability. But, frankly speaking, I like your style much more than theirs.
Kim: Disappointingly, I must say I envy them. It’s the ability to immerse themselves in their situations. It’s their ability to make themselves look sad in a second after cracking jokes. On the contrary, I can hardly sit at the table to eat. When there are those kinds of scenes, I think about them all day long. What is worse, when there’re shooting schedules in the morning, I can’t even sleep well the night before. Then, I go to the studios. So, it’s natural for me to respect those kinds of people who can easily laugh after crying scenes and can ask others “Did I play well?” I think I need that ability to do things in an easier way.
Park: On the other hand, those aspects of yourself also contributed to strengthen viewers’ trust and confidence in you. But, it could be a negative aspect, too. Have you never felt, for example, that a fixed image of you like that gloomy image in inflicted some damage on you?
Kim: But, I think like this. What I am going to say is…… To say that actors transform their images seems a little laughable. After all, actors are in a sense a kind of hardware. They should be open to receive various people in themselves like hardware ready to be installed with new chips of different persons. In this sense, the expression ‘image transformation’ doesn’t look appropriate. And, I believe actors should know how to play the role of each figure that is allotted to them. The so-called ‘fixed image’ is a groundless apprehension that does the rounds all the time. Whatever I did, that kind of story followed me. When I began to play the role of Lee Soon-shin, they said the same. They said, “Since he has played only in modern dramas, he is not fit for the role of Lee Soon-shin. His face isn’t suitable for historical dramas, either.” In fact, nobody proposed to cast the role of Lee Soon-shin for the fact that my face resembled his. They said I looked like Lee Soon-shin only after the drama was all finished. Then, I heard people saying “Kim Myung-min was cast in the drama as he looks like General Lee Soon-shin.” To tell the truth, there were very many people who didn’t agree to cast me claiming that I wasn’t fit for historical dramas at all.
Park: You played the role of Dal-geon, namely, a scamp, after the role of Lee Soon-shin. I could see really your acting ability in , but let me see it better. The interpretation of the character of Dal-geon in was much different from that of ordinary scamps.
Kim: I don’t feel like using even the word ‘interpretation’ and I really didn’t want to play the role. I mean I didn’t like the roles of people who are so nasty and so showy. Those people who show themselves as bad and restive are much too immature. The common scamps have something that comes to a head in themselves. And, they try not to show themselves to be ignorant. In the meantime, the hidden part that comes to a head bursts and unexpected things happen. At first, the character used abusive language often, but later I proposed not using it. Presenting a scoundrel who uses abusive language is too commonplace. So, I said we could show a character of scamp also presenting the figure in another way, that is, a scamp who uses normal language.
Park: You said the term ‘image transformation’ isn’t appropriate. But, I think you were a bit anxious about it. Changing from the role of ‘Lee Soon-shin’ to that of Dal-geon in is in a sense quite sensational.
Kim: Just for this reason, people said to me, “you will have difficulty in ridding yourself of the fixed image of Lee Soon-shin.” Saying so, they gave concrete examples one of which was the indication that I could apply the same acting style to other dramas. I dislike seeing Kim Myung-min in my playing more than anything else. What I want is that people remember the figures whose roles I play. Even if they don’t remember my name, it’s OK with me. In fact, I have about ten friends who monitor my performance and speak frankly to me about it.
Park: What do you mean with the word ‘frankly’?
Kim: They praise me little and criticize me relentlessly. I speak to them on the telephone after the broadcasting of each installment. They tell me all they want to communicate to me. We also use e-mails when we can’t speak by telephone. I often feel ashamed, too. I also feel like throwing out telephone receiver many times.(laughs)
Park: To what degree do they criticize you, for example?
Kim: You know…… They say to me, “Hey, are you something so important? Why did you play the scene that way?” or “You were all Kim Myung-min in the scene.” I hate to hear people tell me I was Kim Myung-min. As you know, acting is in a sense a disguise in front of the audience. I speak like this as Kim Myung-min when I’m not working as an actor. But, when I’m working in some dramas or plays, I must hide my original character to enter the role of Dal-geon or others. So, if people see me as Kim Myung-min in my works, it means I revealed my own character in them. Of course, it can be a little different for viewers because they don’t know me personally. On the contrary, my friends know me very well. Here I may say also that their monitoring doesn’t deserve my attention. They can criticize me unconsciously against their will as they know me so well. You can maybe imagine the same thing if you think of being with your family. When you go out with your family and do something, you feel awkward for some reason or other all the time. It may be understood so, but I don’t want to admit even this fact now. I want to deceive my friends also when I play as an actor. Though they mostly speak poorly of my work, they praise me once in a while, too. Even so they are so stingy with me……(laughs) Anyhow, speaking about they told me later I had made a good choice.
Park: I wondered at your change, too. I thought, ‘Kim Myung-min who became Lee Soon-shin is now becoming Dal-geon so naturally.’
Kim: I also heard that many times. Frankly speaking, I have never thought that until now. I have not been worried about being type cast even once. I knew also this thing could happen to me. But, I thought, ‘since I know it, I will be able to manage it somehow.’ The people around me continued to say to me, “You had better concentrate on movies; Another historical drama will be OK; You would rather choose melodramas.” And, others said, “Any sudden shift is not good for you; There will be negative side effects; People consider you Lee Soon-shin. So, serious problems will pop up if you change your character suddenly; Change your character slowly and consistently. You look like Lee Soon-shin. So, whatever you may do, you look out of place always.” Later, I mulled it over and I arrived at the conclusion that I had to change my image some day. I had to change it one of those days. I thought it would be better to change my character drastically all at once, not slowly. I imagined, ‘If I do so, people will see the change in my character with their own eyes. And then, it will be enough for me to play in a really different style, totally different from that of Lee Soon-shin.’ There could be yet those who would continue to say “He is still Lee Soon-shin despite all his efforts” as they didn’t understand my inner world. That could not be avoided. Nevertheless, I was convinced that they would understand by watching my playing style for some period.
Park: Well, when we see actors, most of them, following the current of time, prefer the people who don’t speak negatively of them in everything. So, they keep around them only those, including their managers, who praise them for their beauty and other things that please them. But, I believe you are different from them.
Kim: Yes, I think so because I am neither handsome nor cute. (To his manager) Isn’t it so? But, I think those who are really good-looking like to hear people telling them they are handsome. They answer saying, “Do you think so?” if people say, “You’re such a dandy!”(all participants laugh) Yes, it’s true. When you tell them so over and over, they really like it very much. The same case is with those who are cute.
Park: Ah, why do they react so? They should have had enough of it. Why do they want it endlessly?
Kim: They hear it always, but they want to confirm it over and over.
Park: How do you feel, then, when people say you are handsome?
Kim: ……Are you kidding me? What kind of question is……?(all participants laugh) Now, I am a really lucky guy. When I began to work with broadcasting company, I didn’t know what to do. There were only very handsome men around me.
Park: You’re right. For a certain period, only Jeong Woo-seong or Jang Dong-geon or others similar to them, though not as handsome as they, could be on TV.
Kim: Yes, but, I thought differently at the time. I believed the time for other people would come certainly. I want to speak about two friends of mine from my school days. Their acting ability and energy were almost the same, but one of them was very handsome and the other very. But, when they were on stage, made up for the play, the latter came to the fore much more than the former, the handsome friend. When you draw pictures on white paper, the pictures are seen clearly. We were seated together, and I said to them, “No matter what role you take, you are handsome always.” At the moment, the director looked at us, and said to me, “You, bandit 3, come here!” So, I got to act as bandit 3.(laughs) From those experiences, I could see hope for my future little by little. Actors must indeed look like every figure that is allotted to them. They may not seem like themselves. I thought, ‘I somewhat resemble him. I do have hope.’
Park: And, the time has come, really.
Kim: Yes, it has. But, when people like me bustle around too much, the time, the era of handsome people, returns. It’s because the world becomes fed up with people like me.(laughs)
Park: In my view, also in that case you will end up on both sides of the fence.(laughs)
Kim: Ah……
Park: Both the side of the handsome and the not so handsome……(all participants laugh)
Kim: It’s too much to compare me with handsome people. You can’t become handsome imitating them!(laughs)
Park: I’m not joking. I’m speaking from my heart! I was astonished when you were working for pictorial shooting. You showed so much classical and gorgeous style for the first time. You were really great!(laughs) You looked like the son of a tycoon in trendy dramas, too. Do you like these kinds of roles? For example, the role of Sam-sik in the drama .
Kim: Yes, of course, certainly!
Park: Apparently, he’s a little bit haughty, but he’s a good guy in fact. If you take the role, you really would show a completely different style.
Kim: Yes, I like that kind of role. It would be interesting to play the part. He looks like arrogant. But, once you get to know him, you know also he’s not so perfect. There are also some elements of comedy in the drama. That’s the fascination of characters of that kind.
Park: Then, do you mean you’d be willing to play the role?
Kim: Why not? It’s fairly good!(laughs) It’s chic!
Park: The works of good quality are needed. At the same time, also these kinds of dramas are necessary to amuse people sometimes. The real problem in our country is that we have too many of them these days. Anyway, we can’t always consider these works poor as we saw well in .
Kim: As I had many difficulties in living in the mountains for 2 years, I need now to go lead a life of luxury for some time……(laughs) If possible, I want to avoid places like mountains and seas for the time being. Growing a beard is also a thing to stop doing…… Living without flush toilet is an unspeakable pain. I hope to play new kinds of roles. It would be interesting. In fact, there were proposals only for comedy programs similar to after this drama had finished.
Park: So I hear. Also Mr. Son Chang-min told me that similarly he had been continuously proposed only for those kinds of roles after the drama .
Kim: Yes, indeed. People think only about what they see. I want to play some cheerful roles in the future. Actually, the roles that I’ve played till now don’t suit my character. They are too much different from my disposition.
Park: Your character seems cheerful and somewhat easygoing.
Kim: Yes, I also like joking.
Park: And, you’re very sensitive, too. (“Yes”) But, you’re not strict with others……

Park: I feel sometimes that one loses out living so. How about your case?
Kim: I don’t think I lose out living so.
Park: If I speak about myself, I’m rather willing to acknowledge the criticism of my friends. If I respond by blushing when they indicate my shortcomings, it’s laughable.
Kim: Yes, I think so, too.
Park: I admit my faults saying “Yes, you’re right. I must overcome them” almost whenever they point them out. So, these human creatures go too far sometimes.(laughs) In this case, they’re too frivolous at times.
Kim: Yes, that’s really true. In that case, I ignore them. When my friends point out exactly my problems that I’m not conscious of, I really thank them and bow my head. But, there are some difficult cases. For example, I play certain scenes in my way for some reasons. And, some people who watch the scenes point out my acting style in the scenes just going on what they saw. In such cases, I counterattack saying “You must watch the drama more before commenting” or “You watched the drama superficially.”
Let me give you an example. I used to speak with one of my arms hanging limp in the scenes in which I was presiding over conferences or seated at the table in . One of my acquaintances said to me, “Your sitting posture isn’t good. You’re a General. So, you must correct your posture considering your role.” So, I told him to watch the whole drama from the previous installments over again. To my surprise, one of my enthusiastic fans-those who watch the whole drama over and over and monitor my playing-wrote about it later. I was surprised because I was thinking nobody would spot it. I began to assume the posture from the 60th installment in which I suffered gunshot in my shoulder. I intentionally assumed the posture to play the role of a man who had been shot. Neither the director nor any other person copped it. I did it just to play my part better. But, it was a thrill to know there was an ardent fan who spotted it.
Park: I think you were really pleased.
Kim: I let my manager know. People applauded praising me.
Park: I suppose it’s difficult to manage those kinds of details specially in TV programs.
Kim: Maybe so. But, I can also take it as a matter of course. I can remember the fact that I was shot differently from other people as I’m aware of my past story. So, I can do it. And, it’s normal that others aren’t aware of it. You forget many things for certain reasons like schedules while working for TV programs. So, to remember these small details is the duty of actors, not of the director. Actors themselves should care about these things.
Park: I remember people said that you would become an actor since your childhood. I once heard. The power supply was cut off while you were dancing at kindergarten. But, you went on dancing alone unawares. It sounds like an episode from the infancy of a great actor. Do you think you’re a born actor?
Kim: Eh, who knows? I don’t know why I did that. I was thinking only of dancing well. I was not thinking about other things and there was the music for the dance. I was thinking I had to dance well at the time. That’s how I remember it.
Park: (With one voice) It means you were born an actor. What do you do when you’re not working as an actor?
Kim: I like mountain climbing. So, I enjoy running over mountains and…… I usually spend a lot of time with my baby.
Park: The reason women like you is that you look like a man who loves only one woman. They think also that you’re a good father. I believe you didn’t chase after girls in your teens, either.(laughs)
Kim: Yes, I didn’t like to…… although I enjoy doing many things. In fact, there were some guys who said they couldn’t live without women even for a day. I really couldn’t understand them. A man needs also other men around him on occasions, and he needs to be alone some times, too. Maybe I needed much time to be alone. I can say I enjoyed being alone before I married my wife. And, I spent my time also doing different physical exercise. There was a hard period of life that I considered lost days. I applied for a job as a TV talent and was employed in the end. But, I had to pass my days playing as an extra or doing nothing for a long time. So, I spent much time taking exercise to give a meaning to my life. I thought I would get compensated for the lost time later only doing so. I thought that suffering hardships, passing my time alone and writing down my thoughts and feelings would be a power to help me stand firm in times of prosperity or of challenge afterwards. Those who succeed after being cast suddenly while walking along the streets don’t know how to get through situations when they are confronted with unexpected difficulties. On the other hand, guys who have grown up like weeds, as my case(laughs), know how to analyze the problems and know what to do to overcome the situations with composure.
Park: In the process, you maybe become wiser and know how to act to prevent those kinds of difficulties beforehand.
Kim: Yeah. I mean you become an old fox, as it were, little by little.(laughs)
Park: (Laughs) Do you think you became a bit like that?
Kim: Yes, I’m telling you…… I got that way.(laughs)
Park: By the way, have you gotten over the shock of the ‘Ji Jin-hee, go for it!’ happening yet?(laughs)
Kim: Oh, who told you that story?(laughs)
Park: I learned of it by chance while searching somewhere on the Web. Those ladies who mobbed you for a while said to you “Ji Jin-hee, go for it!” before saying goodbye. Isn’t that so?
Kim: You heard the story really? I don’t speak about it so often……(laughs) Ah, you’re right. Maybe I talked about it once. Where did I talk about it?!

Park: (Laughs) It must have been a difficult situation, really.
Kim: In fact, I could have gotten out, but I didn’t as I could not disappoint those people.(laughs)
Park: And, you are placed fifth in the list of attractive married male stars!(laughs)
Kim: It reflects the fact that I’m out of the news these days……(laughs) My friends talk of one thing and another telling me that they see always the news when they input my name on the Internet; “Do something to make good news, or, give interviews. The same story is in the news every day and the main pages are covered with the photos of Mr. Gam Woo-seong(the 1st in the list).”
Park: (Laughs) Now, there is the news about your prize-winning and the film . You’re going to act the role of a doctor in the film, aren’t you?
Kim: Yes, I saw the script before I began to shoot the drama . At that time, I turned down the proposal. Luckily, there was the proposal again after the drama. Then, I accepted it as the new script was much improved on the previous one. And, I decided to act the role of the doctor because it was not yet designated and I liked it very much.
Park: But, you don’t want to work only as a movie actor, do you?
Kim: No, I don’t. The only important thing is the role.
Park: What kind of actor do you want to become when you grow older? Name an example.
Kim: Like all other people, I like Robert De Niro. I have liked him for a really long time.
Park: Every male actor talks about two great actors. One of them is De Niro and……
Kim: (Laughs) Al Pacino?
Park: Most of them like one of these two.
Kim: I prefer Robert De Niro.(laughs)
Park: The types of these two men are completely different. They have different inclinations.
Kim: I like Robert De Niro specially because his character changes in every film and consequently he becomes another man always. Al Pacino is also a good actor, but he looks like Al Pacino all the time.
Park: That’s a great ability, too, but you prefer De Niro……
Kim: Yes, I’m with De Niro. In general, actors can’t play as leading actors when they are old. But, in Hollywood, also the old actors can play the leads in films. Regardless of the situations, Robert De Niro plays very many roles, including supporting roles and other minor roles, when he is needed in the films. He’s a really great actor. He plays for a short time in the films, but he renders the stories vivid. He doesn’t play the supporting roles because he is a supporting actor. Nobody calls De Niro supporting actor. But, it’s he who wants to do it. I don’t think he does so from a selfish motive. Instead, I believe it can be an expression of his love for films or of his gratitude for the audience. He was fairly good enough to become the ideal lover of many women playing the role of the ‘1st male protagonist’ in trendy melodramas(his figurative expression that actors should become other persons each time they are installed diverse chips was appropriate indeed. He looks like another person somehow also when he changes just some of his style and facial appearance). Moreover, he was so unpretentious and human that I couldn’t believe that he had been living for 10 years in the entertainment world that is known to be very rough. Not a bluffing, self-satisfaction nor excessive narcissism-found so commonly among the actors-could be seen in him. No more words are necessary. ‘I want to become his friend!’ That says it all!
