ナントロシーズの提案、これはですね、どうして生まれたかということですが、まず最初にいろんな要素がありますけれども、まず最初に日本の国内での事情が当然あります。巨大地震、海溝での巨大地震が起きてたくさんの人が死ぬと、１００年、２００年に一度おきるわけですけれども、これの正体がもう少しわからないだろうかと、という大きな気持ちがあるわけですね。これは研究者にもありますし、一般市民にもあるわけですよ。ですから、これをまず何とかしようということが大きな動機としてあったと思います。それと同時にですね、もちろん日本ではなくて国際的な研究者の集団があるわけですけれども、地震学者であるとか、それから断層を調べている学者であるとか、色々いるわけですけれども、そういう人たちが研究を進めてきて、地震というのはどうして起こるのかというのが大分わかってきたんですね。そうすると後は、巨大な地震が起こる現場に掘ろうではないかという気分が高まってきたものですから、後は研究者で何回も集会を持ちます。年に１回２回持って時に日本で、時にはアメリカで持ったりして、気分を高めて、それをそれぞれ各国の国に説明をしたりして、そのプロジェクトというのが出来上がってきたということです。 | Translation - English
Well, the reason the NanTroSEIZE (Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiments) came to be was due to a few initial factors, but above all was a natural response to the situation in Japan. The “Big One”, a huge earthquake that kills many people, happens about once every 100-200 years, and there was this great desire to become more familiar with the nature of the problem – not only for the researchers, but for the general public as well. So, above all, I think there was a pretty big motivation to do something about it. At the same time, it was about bringing together various international research groups, earthquake scholars, and those engaged in fault research, and really helping them progress with their research and understand why earthquakes happen. Afterwards, since there was a general feeling that, well, shouldn’t we go dig in the places where the Big One will hit?, the researchers held a bunch of meetings on the idea. Meetings were held about once or twice a year in Japan, while also being held in the US, which enabled us to explain the details of the project to various countries and really helped raise the project profile. |

I received a Master's Degree in Japan and Korea Studies and Economics from SAIS Jonhs Hopkins, and specialize in political and economic-focused translations.
