Source text - English DANIEL LIBESKIND: I¡¯ve been a great admirer of your work, and I particularly like the subversive way you photograph architecture [with out-of-focus images] in order to dissolve it, almost get rid of it. HIROSHI SUGIMOTO: Yes, this is my attack on architecture. DL: And it works. I actually think what you¡¯re doing is very close to the ideas of revolutionary 18th-century French architect [Étienne-Louis] Boullée, who said that the only way to see architecture is at night, when you don¡¯t see it. The good buildings you¡¯ll still see; the bad ones will just disappear. HS: Many buildings just disappear. But you feel the presence of others, even during the night. Architecture starts with very beautiful, idealistic visions, but as you negotiate actual reality, you start to lose them. A good architect always fights to keep the spirit of the original vision. DL: I would say the vision is more about the light and the substance of architecture. HS: True, the details all melt down. Some architects are only concerned with details. DL: I always thought that the Miesian adage ¡°God is in the details¡± should be reversed. God is everywhere, not in the details. Because detail is just chaos. It¡¯s arbitrary and accidental. HS: The first time I heard your name, I thought you were a conceptual artist who had never built a building. DL: My wife calls me a late bloomer because it¡¯s true. The Jewish Museum [in Berlin, officially opened in 2001] was my first building. I didn¡¯t approach architecture initially, because I didn¡¯t like architecture offices. I decided to pursue a different path [as a theoretical architect]. But I always thought that I was practising architecture even when I was doing drawings, which seemed ridiculous to people who thought that it was just conceptual art. And in some ways I think your photographs speak to that: there¡¯s always more to phenomena than there appears to be. There¡¯s always something deeper: it has less to do with things and more to do with non-things. HS: I try to make the non-existing space appear. It is just a temporary method to make something visible. Actually, I can¡¯t photograph the things I want to photograph, but only what surrounds them. I can only visualise and suggest. DL: That¡¯s very similar to architecture, because in many ways they share exactly the same idea: that non-existent reality is reality nonetheless. HS: An advantage of being a photographer is that once I present something as photography, people tend to believe it. But it¡¯s actually all fiction. DL: And in many ways, architecture is consumed through photography. I used to love Mies¡¯s [1929] Barcelona Pavilion before it was reconstructed [in 1986]. But after that I began to really dislike it, and I thought, ¡°Why did I love the Mies Pavilion when I saw it in those great photographs, in black and white, but now I dislike it?¡± And I realised it was because in the photograph, you can never go behind it. And I think that¡¯s actually why photography is so effective, because in architecture you can always go behind it. HS: Photography fantasises reality. It¡¯s a hallucinogenic vision. DL: Yes, it is hallucinogenic. It¡¯s kind of alchemical because it speaks to the ambiguity of consciousness. We are intending that reality be an object, because we think of ourselves as objects. But we are conscious that consciousness is not an object, so reality is not really an object. I think photography – and architecture, to many degrees – is about the light. And in architecture that doesn¡¯t just mean windows and illumination, but what kind of light the architecture can radiate, even in the darkness. The real awe of architecture is that it doesn¡¯t only receive light, but also gives back a certain light. Bad buildings don¡¯t give much light back. They reflect the light physically, but so what? They don¡¯t change the light. HS: I find that good architecture, or the architecture that I like, is very simple and quite dark. Like [in my image of the 1922] Schindler House in Los Angeles. DL: But I would reverse what you¡¯re saying. I think that you take the simplicity of the Schindler House and you turn it into incredible complexity. HS: Some people are impressed with my photography and then go to actually visit these buildings and feel let down. In the building process, much of the spirit of an architect¡¯s vision gets lost. But some spirits remain, so I try to make them reappear. DL: But to me, it¡¯s often more the spirit of light than the spirit of the building. It¡¯s a spirit of luminosity that the building might actually not have, except under the condition of stress that you put on the building by being there. HS: In books, photographs and images, these buildings are already famous. People already share a common vision of how they should look, so I¡¯m trying to recreate this already-provided vision and just give it a facelift. But I don¡¯t know how to deal with the actual presence of the physical materiality. People view the world through photography, so if you face the actual building without any information, you have no way to judge this building. DL: This is why I think that if an architect is conscious of the history of photography, the movement of space is also a critique of photography. It¡¯s a critique of the flattened image. And I think that this is where architecture is becoming more radicalised, to create spaces that work against photography. I don¡¯t do this consciously, and I¡¯ve never had a photographer as great as you photographing my buildings, but often people say to me, ¡°I was in your building, and having seen photographs of it, it¡¯s not at all what I expected.¡± Because, pictures reduce architecture to lines and spaces, but the experience is not reduced to that. HS: I¡¯ve been working on many museum shows and most of the spaces are designed by famous architects: Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry. They don¡¯t think of the user¡¯s point of view. I¡¯m always fighting with the architecture. DL: But you love architecture, don¡¯t you? Or do you hate architecture? HS: No, no. I¡¯m now becoming an architect – my first commission was a Shinto shrine [the Go-oh shrine in Japan]. DL: That¡¯s the one with the glass stair. HS: Yes, right. A camera-maker could make hundreds of lenses out of them [each stair tread is made of optical glass]. DL: I would love to see it. And, meeting you, I think more photographers should become architects and more architects should become photographers. The principle component is synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite, a biomaterial with over twenty years of use in orthopedics, neurosurgery, dentistry, otolaryngology and ophthalmology. Calcium hydroxylapatite is the primary mineral constituent of bone and teeth. The semi-solid nature of the implant is created by suspending calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel carrier that consists primarily of water (sterile water for injection USP) and glycerin (USP). The gel structure is formed by the addition of a small amount of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (USP). The gel is dissipated in vivo and replaced with soft tissue growth, while the calcium hydroxylapatite remains at the site of injection. I am a medical doctor (pediatric specialist) and freelance translator from South Korea. As a specialist, I have translated, edited and proofread a variety of medical documents including product informations, clinical study protocols, documents for validation or approvement from government regulating bodies, medical device manuals and medical articles. In medical translation, accuracy is more important than anything else. Not only could inaccurate translation cost enormous expenses from delay in approval process and miscommunications in operating devices or cooperative studies, but might cause danger to patient's health and even life.
