El 31 de mayo no será un día fácil de olvidar para el valencianismo entero. El día había comenzado extraño, como previendo situaciones anómalas, con un clima que no se decidía ni por el fresco de jersey liviano ni por el calor incipiente que por esta época empieza a imperar en la zona.
A media mañana, los móviles de los periodistas que habitualmente siguen al Valencia empezaban a reventar ante tantos llamados cargados con un rumor: Rafa Benítez dijo basta y se va.
La noticia, que no era tal porque no había una comunicación oficial sino medias palabras de asentimiento dichas con la boca chica por algunos dirigentes, empezó a recorrer la ciudad a la velocidad de la luz. Sorpresa fue la primera reacción, sin poder todavía digerir la pésima nueva el aficionado ché. La segunda, de indignación, al verse en cada televisor de la ciudad las lágrimas dolidas del técnico más importante de la historia del club confirmando lo que nadie quería oír.

異常な事態を予告するかの様に、この日は朝から薄手のセーターが欲しくなる様な涼しい日になるのか、この時期のバレンシア地方特有の一足早い初夏のような暑さになるのか、どっちつかずの奇妙な天候で始まった。
昼前頃には、バレンシア付き記者達の携帯は「ラファエル・ベニテスはもうたくさんだと言って辞めた」という噂の電話が殺到してパンク寸前状態となっていた。
公式発表は無いものの、クラブ幹部数人の言葉の端々から伺い知る事ができたこのニュースがバレンシア中に知れ渡るのに時間はかからなかった。
このニュースを聞いたファンは誰もが、まずは驚愕に陥り、そしてこの悪夢のような事実をなんとか受け入れた次の瞬間、街中のテレビに映るクラブ史上最も偉大な監督が記者会見で流す痛恨の涙を見ながら、最も起こって欲しくなかった現実を目の当たりにして憤りが湧いてくるのを禁じえなかったはずだ。
