You can find most of the information about us and the nice place we live and work in from our website www.macautranslations.com which serves as a marketing tool for our company, a helpdesk for our clients and a workplace for our translators.
Here is some information which is NOT on our website and which is intended for professional audience.
Macau Translations was founded by several independent translators who are also qualified professionals in their areas of specialization; it is a partnership formed by people who uphold the values of intellectual rigour and academic integrity.
The founders, who also consider themselves as “in-house”, or “permanent”, staff of the company, possess strong background in linguistics and extensive past working experience as full-time or part-time translators or interpreters. The company also uses freelance translators, interpreters and reference consultants as an additional resource.
Macau Translations works in both directions: the company accepts translation and interpreting assignments and also outsources work to other translators and translation agencies. Macau Translations also performs confidential assignments which are covered by non-disclosure agreements. Such assignments are done exclusively in-house.
Sometimes our translators choose to work alone, under their own names. When working alone, they assume full personal responsibility for the quality of their work. However, when assignments are negotiated and performed under the name of the company, it is the company that is responsible for the quality control and delivery of the work.
When it comes to assignment of jobs to translators, our approach is somewhat different from conventional beliefs which call for a native speaker as the first and foremost candidate for translation. After years of experience (both good and bad) with native speakers handling target texts, we realized that more emphasis should be placed instead on the proficiency of translator in both the language pair and the area of specialization, although he or she may not necessarily be the native speaker of the target language.
Of course, the final version of the target text is reviewed by a native speaker before being handled out, at no additional cost to the client. We have native speakers among our permanent staff for all target languages that we handle, and our translators routinely review each other’s work as a matter of normal practice.
