Why don\'t you google independent professional?? Self-employed is only ONE aspect. In all LAtin languages TO English, it\'s independent professionals. My comment under your answer is correct. For example, on a buisness card, no one would write:

John Smith
self-employed professional...but rather

John Smith
Independent professional

etc.

So it depends on context, but the formal term is independent.

As a CATEGORY of the workforce, the term is independent professional...now, depending on the context, you might say self-employed....but in general, that\'s the term..the rest is determined by context ALONE...

nothing: I think you have to add professional. A self-employed plumber is not a profissional liberal. Think of what types of jobs are considered "professions" in English (as opposed to trades); it's the same in Portuguese

I see that the context is really essential in this case. Fir instance, when it comes to translations, I put \"Freelance Translator\" but in other cases I say \"Independent Agent\", completely like in one of the comments.
I fully agree with jane that every independent professional is self-employed, but not the other way round.

My two cents of wisdom are that, in Portuguese, "profissões liberais" refer to 1) intellectual work (for which formal training is required) and 2) a certain independence in the practice of such profession. Although one of the definitions above does point out to the self-employed, one must take into account that, as someone else put it, not all self-employed can be considered "profissionais liberais". Moreover, I know quite a few lawyers who would not describe themselves as "self-employed" but would nonetheless claim to be "profissionais liberais". I think, therefore, that "profissão liberal" refers more to the possibility of those (learned) professions that allow for an independent, autonomous, and, yes, self-employed practice.

They usually have their own regulatory bodies and strict admission requirements: Eg. Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Dentists, etc.
