juliebarba: 10:12pm Mar 5, 2008: Given the other use of English in the text, it might be cascade - taking something downwards - taking the checks to a lower level maybe? or a series of checks. Just a thought, as I often see it at work in the context of 'cascading information'

Not entirely happy with the above phrasing, but my impression of the meaning here is the sense of 'cascader' implied in the expression 'en cascade' - the robert gives the example 'des demissions en cascade' - 'a chain or spate of resignations'.
In that example, the 'cascade' effect is a bit like a 'domino' effect - there's an idea of events being interconnected, one leading to the other.

While that context is negative, I wonder whether the sense of 'cascader' here is similar, but in a positive direction: ie let our actions interconnect, overlap, work in concert with each other - if we're talking 'controls' here this seems especially appropriate - you need everyone's work to be reinforcing one another's, even at the risk of a little redundancy, rather than things not being followed up, reaching a dead end etc...

Perhaps 'collaborate' would be a one-word possibility here?
