regarding the subject matter Explanation: This is a term that is frequently used in this context. Example: The definition of a "highly qualified" teacher in section 9101(23) of the ESEA is very specific about the ways in which a teacher may demonstrate subject knowledge and teaching skills. All experienced teachers (i.e., teachers who are not new to the field, and thus have previously taught in elementary, middle, or high schools), whether recruited from within the United States or from abroad, may demonstrate the required subject competency and teaching skills either by passing a rigorous subject-matter competency test in each core academic subject they will teach or by demonstrating competency in each core academic subject on the basis of a "high, objective, uniform, State standard of evaluation." http://www.ed.gov/policy/elsec/guid/secletter/030324.html -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2008-10-15 06:31:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Ik heb het gevoel dat vakinhoudelijk hier betrekking heeft op de kennis die tussen de oren van de potentiele leraar moet zitten, en waarvan hij of zij is staat is deze in het klaslokaal tentoon te spreiden. |

pertinent Explanation: Admittedly the intended meaning of 'vakinhoudelijk' is tricky to pin down here, but I suggest 'pertinent' because it leaves open the question of exactly which 'vak' is meant, as does the source text. It could be that the author means that the descriptions of the skills are specifically relevant to the activity or profession of teaching, but that can only be judged after examining them (and even then you may be none the wiser). |

vakinhoudelijke omschrijving (here) description of what each entails Explanation: Always interesting to translate, this one. In some contexts, you need a very specific translation. I recently translated something on teacher training about 'vakinhoudelike, didactische en pedagogische competencies'. I rendered these as (something along the lines of) subject matter knowledge, classroom teaching skills and knowledge of teaching theory. I don't think such a precise distinction is needed in your text. From the context available, something like this would be fine: Teachers need to have a number of general basic competencies before being able to teach in English. The most important of these are set out below along with a brief description of what each entails. These are followed by descriptions of the other competencies and responsibilities of the teacher. To me, the text is simply saying: here is a list of competencies with a brief elaboration on each. |
