This is the definition given by De Franchis(Dizionario Giuridico) for "interrogatorio di polizia" - "interrogatorio dell'arrestato" - after the person has been arrested. "L'interrogatorio effettuato dalla polizia nel corso delle indagini che non hanno ancora raggiunto la fase accusatoria e l'indiziato non è stato ancora arrestato o comunque privato della sua libertà" - is "investigatory interrogation.

I think the "garanzia" bit refers to the fact that the interrogation is carried out with due respect for the arrested persons fundamental rights -

De Franchis give "garantismo" - "safeguards of individuals against state oppressive practices"

Perhaps therefore "formal custodial interrogation"
