which is / due to it being the area of greatest / highest subsidence Explanation: A great thickness of sediment normally builds up BECAUSE of subsidence, i.e. the basin deepens due to tectonics and leaves more space to be filled up, the thickness of sediment does not normally cause subsidence in geological processes. This is Peru where active tectonics lead to susidence, forming basins which are infilled - hence I opt, in context, for causal, not resultant, subsidence. Imagine a delta forming at the end of a river - if more sediment arrives, it can only thicken to water height, it doesn't build a mountain, instead it spreads over a wider area.
