This is the first line from a song by Ella Baila Sola. For the full lyrics, see http://www.lyricsdownload.com/ella-baila-sola-que-se-ma-va-d...
I have two questions about this line: 1) What does "se me va de las manos" mean? I think its literal translation would be something like "my hands are leaving me", but this makes no sense, so it must be an idiom. 2) Is "el verano" the subject of this phrase or is the line simply saying that something (whatever "se me va de las manos" means) is happening in the summer?

And about your 2 questions. for Q1: it literally means it slips through my fingers and Q2: Yes, the subject is summer, so we could say The summer is slipping through my fingers amongst car smoke

Comment: "I like this translation with Carmen Schultz's change of amongst to amid. Thank you!"

That it slips from my hands among the cars' smoke (or smog), the summer
I believe that's the meaning.

The summer slips away (through my hands) like the fumes of cars
Summer is the subject here. It passes by like the fumes/gas of passing cars.

Summer's slipping away, like city smoke through my fingers
Here is a way to preserve some of the imagery
2 hrs
Smoke from cars surrounds me and summer, beyond my grasp...
I just like the poetic tone and style here...
