A werkleertraject is actually a combination of *on and off* the job training, combining classroom-based education with work. Some companies have revived the word "apprenticeship" to describe this kind of arrangement (perhaps following the example of the TV programme "The Apprentice"..?). E.g.:

-> "DHL Apprenticeship Scheme
Opportunity for 16 to 18 year old school leavers to develop long term careers whilst also achieving professional qualifications. The DHL Apprenticeship Scheme includes personal development, on and off the job training, mentor support with real work experience."

In that case it becomes important to determine what the nature of this combination is. Is the education a two hour a day component, or one month per year, or somewhere in between?

I agree with Glenda that 'on-the-job training' doesn't quite cut it. I usually translate this as 'work-study track' and then add a footnote to further specify what this means. If it is mentioned in a diploma, for example, sometimes the exact number of hours in each are specified.

While this could be an option, I do believe that on-the-job training is commonly the kind of thing that you do WITHOUT any educational support, i.e. you are learning as you go. Indeed, it is often quite a shock when all you get is on-the-job training. :)

I also considered work-study as a translation, but that (in the US) usually refers to a type of government aid where your employer gets to hire the student at a discount, and the student gets tuition credit or money to help fund his/her studies.

In this case, it seems we are talking about professional training with a work component, like for instance what tends to happen to nurses, who are recruited to work while still in school, or like Union carpenters, who go through their apprenticeship working 4 days a week, and going to school 1-1 1/2 days a week...
