Bulk retailer Massmart Holdings Ltd said on Wednesday that headline earnings per share leapt 42 percent for the first half of its financial year, helped in part by double-digit inflation.

Headline earnings, which exclude exceptional items and their tax effects, rose to 145.4 cents a share in six months to December 29, from 102.5 cents in the same period a year ago. The figure was just below analysts' average forecast at 146.7 cents.
