concrete edging or kerb Explanation: These are concrete paving stones which are laid at the edge of a pavement The side referenced is not terribly clear but will give you an idea. http://www.pavingexpert.com/edging3.htm -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 16 hrs (2011-11-14 08:40:32 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Having seen the photograph in Roy's reference, I don't think we commonly have anything like this in English. The Arnhem memorial is probably quite unique. However, based on the meaning of kantstrook plus the actuality of the picture, I would hazard calling it an "edging strip", rather than a kerb or kerbstone because the latter two terms usually refer to the edge of the pavement where the vehicular traffic is running and not to the edge where the shop fronts are. Edging strip is the nearest description I can think of to describe Roy's picture. |

Reference: Stone strip? Reference information: "mayor of Arnhem, together with an ancestor of Sir Philip Sydney, uncovered a monument. The monument shows a strip with text, to memorize the life of Sir Philip Sidney." Met de term 'kantstrook' lijkt hier een steenstrip te worden bedoeld. Zie de middelste foto onder het portret van Sir Philip Sidney: http://www.petervanos.com/news/d/2400/ |
