предложение Explanation: It seems that "спрямление" here means trying to fit the research into the rigidly preset framework determined by the budget thus making it a unidirectional evened-out research, even though the internal logic tells us of the necessity to deviate from the base line of the research and explore the adjacent directions or trends. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr 47 mins (2003-08-31 04:57:15 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- ... dangerous by tending to forcedly rectify/even-out the logical structure of the research and ... |

спрямление oversimplification Explanation: спрямление (here) - oversimplification, vulgarization -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs 2 mins (2003-08-31 06:12:06 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- besides, I would not put: subsidies of science - should be of scientific research/work - not \'science\' in general -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs 4 mins (2003-08-31 06:13:55 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- instead of \'targeted\' - \'selective\' (subsidizing) is better -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs 13 mins (2003-08-31 06:23:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- чревато оно и возникновением псевдонаучных направлений - capable of giving life to some pseudoscientific schools. \'schools\' instead of \'trends\' |

dictating too straightforward research path Explanation: OR making research (path) too straightforward. So the idea is to use "too straightforward" instead of "спрямление" and "path" instead of "логика" |

by bringing a bias to bear on the aims of the research Explanation: and skewing interpretation of the results If one's research is biased towards the agenda of those providing the grant, then it is limited, blinkered, "спрямлено" |

a version Explanation: Such earmarked funding of scientific research bears the danger of defying the inherent logic of the research process, as well as of giving way to subjectivity in the evaluation of its results; furthermore, it may well contribute to the rise of pseudoscientific drifts. 'Earmarked' might be in quotes, if the context requires it. 'Defying' might also be 'neglecting'... but I still think 'defy' fits best. |

...dangerous due to (possible) predisposition of... Explanation: --- -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2003-08-31 19:55:38 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I think here, спрямление = предрасположенность, склонность (к) Also, спрямление can mean \"cutting corners\" |
