الميلاديين.. وفى هذا ما يشير إلى أن الحصون بشكلها الذى يشاهَد الآن فى
الأديرة الحالية لم تكن قد أُنشِئَت حتى القرن السادس الميلادى.. ولو كان
هناك حصون فى القرن الرابع لذكرها الرحّالون وقتذاك.. ولعل السبب فى تفكير
جماعات الرهبان فيما بعد فى بناء الحصون هو ضعف الحكومة الرومانية وعدم
مقدرتها على حماية الرهبان، مما حدا بهم إلى العمل على تأمين أنفسهم من هذه
القبائل البربرية التى عُرِفَت بإسم قبائل المازاكى والمريوطيين (ويقال أن
الذى بنى تلك الحصون بالأديرة هو الملك زينون (474- 491م) تكريماً لإبنته
الراهبة إيلارية التى تنسّكت فى برية شيهيت -متخفّية فى زى الرجال بإسم
الراهب إيلارى- وذاع صيتها بعد نياحتها فى العالم كله).
