Thank you. I am satisfied this is the correct term although ghits shows the term used on surfaces for entrance way mats. See http://www.ids-france.net/batiment/tapis-grattants. /picots.php. The pic that I have shows the same nib but spread out more and used on the underside of car mat.

neutral  Tony M: 'engagé' suggests to me these are the kind of mats that have studs in the floor and holes in the mats that fit onto them, like my old car used to have.
