Pour ma part c'est ainsi que je traduirais cette phrase :
Passant entre les oliviers, il revint vers la barrière entourée de piliers"
A mon sens, il ne se dirige pas vers les piliers mais vers la barrière qui est entourée, ornée, encadrée, etc.. de piliers.

neutral  Tony M: The purpose of 'pillared' is almost certainly to give an impression that this was an important, imposing gate, not just a rustic gate into a field. So rather than 'alourdir', it might be quite important for the image to be conveyed.
