English term or phrase: bearing hectares
*** remains the largest grapefruit production region in the world with just over 18,000 bearing hectares (44,900 acres) of *** trees. It’s estimated that there are 4.6 million bearing **** trees in ****.

What is the difference between "bearing hectares" and "acres".
Would it be: "18 000 hectares de production (44 900 hectares)"?

Explanation:
If this is anywhere other than Canada, then the metric unit of area hectare (= 10,000 m²) = (approx.) 2.471 (imperial) acres.

In Canada, the FR term 'acre' is used with a different area.

So your suggestion as it stands would not be correct.

'bearing' of course just means that the trees are mature enough to be bearing fruit.

Personally, I would leave out the acres, to avoid cluttering, and above alll, confusing the issue.

AS LONG AS the 'acres' weren't the original units in the source country!

If that were the case, then I'd keep the 'acres' and put the hectare conversion in brackets following; however, from the way your source text is expressed, I don't imagine this is the case.

agree  Victoria Britten: Yes, the "bearing" applies to the acres too: you could say xxx bearing hectares (yyy bearing acres); it's not a special size of hectare for fruit-growing purposes.
