English term or phrase: Car allowance
"Determine finance required and car allowance"

"Know what your customer can afford on a monthly basis based on their car allowance" (...)

Explanation:
I can't say I've come across it either here in France.

I have some doubts about the idea of 'allocation' — that sounds more like some kind of Social Security benefit, like 'child allowance'

In my experience, it means a sum of money 'allowed' (usually on a monthly or annual basis) to someone in recognition of use of their own car for their employer's purposes — this may be because they don't justify a full-blown company car, or perhaps they prefer to drive a car of a higher grade than they would be entitled to, so this way, they pay the difference themselves.

But it saves all the accounting involved in paying an allowance based on actual mileage travelled.

Note the various ways in which travelling expenses are commonly reimbursed (in the UK, at least):

1) for occasional users, they will often simply use their own private vehicle and then claim back on the basis of a fixed amount per mile / km actually travelled — this amount is intended to take into account not only fuel, but also a certain amount for wear-and-tear. This is commonly called a 'mileage allowance' (= 'frais kilométrique')

2) Alternatively, the company may provide a pool of vehicles (owned and maintained by the company), which employees may use when required for work purposes; these might be used in the case of someone who doesn't have their own vehicle, or where a special type of vehicle is needed (e.g. small van), or perhaps where dirty work is involved that might damage a private car. This is a 'pool car' or 'voiture de sociéte' — may be used by anyone.

3) For major car users (e.g. field sales reps), they will often be issued with a car owned (and often/sometimes maintained) by the company; they may be allowed to use this for occasional personal use as well — because it is allocated for use by only one specific person, this is a 'company car' ('voiiture de fonction'), and is regarded as a 'benefit in kind' and as such, subjected to tax.

4) For major users who for some reason do not want or cannot have an actual dedicated company car, they may receive a 'car allowwnce' — this is a participation by the company towards the cost of running their own car when that is used for work purposes. Common reasons for this may be either that the company doesn't want or doesn't have the means to provide an outright company car (or just policy); or that the person is judged not to use the car often enough / mostly for company business; or that they would like to keep their old car, or wish to drive a car of a higher grade than their seniority in the company would justify; in this case, the company simply pays the 'car allowance' on the basis of the car it thinks the person 'deserves', and then they can spend the money as they see fit. Depending on how this allowance is applied, it may well be taxable (or not).

I am well aware that the same systems may not exist in FR-speaking countries, but whatever translation is used does need to take these differences into account.

disagree  Tony M: Sorry, but that's NOT true! Possibly in France, but in terms of this source text, as I've explained at length, there is this third, intermediate system. If it doesn't exist in France, fair enough — but it IS neceessary to render the notion from the s/l.
