Polish term or phrase: chciał
Miałam wtedy 2 lata. Umiałam już samodzielnie jeść kaszę jaglaną z miski drewnianej łyżką drewnianą, którą mi ojciec wyrzeźbić chciał.

Wiadomo, że jest to trochę inne znaczenie niż po prostu "wanted to do it" bo to znaczy "wanted to do it and did it".

English translation:chose to
Explanation:
Ja to rozumiem jako "zechciał", prawie "raczył". Stąd "chose to carve/chisel/cut". W zastępstwie "decided".

Ale pewnie będą lepsze sugestie :)

was eager [to]

Explanation:
eager
jestem pewien tego bardzo angielskiego słowa do wplecenia w podanym kontekście;
oddaje kogoś jako:
ożywionego pragnieniem, gorliwego, bardzo pragnącego coś zrobić ...

to be eager to do something, kilka przykładów:
Mary was more than eager to comply.
John sat and began talking about Paris again to an audience eager to hear him.
I'm just eager to start shopping.
(bardzo kobiece pragnienie :)
