Please note a tendency in current idomatic EN usage to make terms gender-neutral simply by leaving off an earlier '-man' — the commonest example being perhaps 'chair' instead of 'chairman' / 'chairwoman' or the incredibly ugly 'chair-person'. In the question term here, 'helm' is being used in just this way, to avoid saying 'helmsman' etc.

It would clearly be nonsensical to adopt the literal meaning of 'helm' = 'barre' in this context; even more so the archaic meaning of 'helm' (= a specific kind of helmet) = 'haume'!

  -> Yes, but in En we are more sensitive to remaining gender-neutral, hence why in MODERN usage we often talk just about the 'helm', meaning 'the helms-person'
