Portuguese term or phrase: Era escuro como breu
I am translating Momentos de Aqui by Ondjaki (Angolan Portuguese) and this term appears:

'era escuro como breu' - he wast jet-black/pitch-black. Can you say that about a person? Would 'black as the night' be more appropriate?
