Die Alpen und das Alpenvorland
umfassen unabhängig von einer bestimmten Höhenlinie das Gebiet des Gebirges selbst, den Alpenrand (z.B. mit dem Bodensee) sowie alle Gebiete nördlich der Alpen, in denen die Seen geologisch (Gesteinsschotter aus den Alpen), damit gewässerchemisch alpin sowie durch ein alpines Abflussregime (Frühjahrs- und Sommerhochwässer infolge Schneeschmelze, hoher Schwebstoffanteil, niedrige Zuflusstemperaturen) charakterisiert sind. Dabei werden Alpenseen und Voralpenseen voneinander abgegrenzt.
