L'expression "plug-in program" en anglais est partiellement redondante car "plug-in" désigne en soit un composant logiciel qui n'est rien d'autre qu'un programme. L'intention en anglais semble donc ici de mettre les points sur les i et de désigner le plug-in comme étant un "VRAI" plug-in (tel que: Java, Flash, Silverlight, Acrobat, DivX... selon mécanismes d'accueil normalisés comme NPAPP ou PPAPI) et non pas une simple "extension", ou "module additionnel", ou "add-on" etc.

L'anglais "plug-in", tout comme "plug-in program" d'ailleurs, se traduirait donc en français simplement par "module d'extension", mais pour rendre la même nuance de mettre les points sur les i et désigner un "VRAI" plug-in, on peut rappeler le terme anglais de référence entre parenthèses comme c'est relativement souvent l'usage en français lorsqu'il s'agit d'informatique et qu'il s'agit d'être précis.

On obtient un résultat équivalent avec la traduction "programme/module d'extension".
