Bei der Gründung des Schwerpunkts Fotografie 1958 an der Staatlichen Kunstschule wurde Fotografie immer im Zusammenhang mit dem Grafik-Design-Studium gesehen. Dadurch, dass die in den 60er Jahren noch bedeutsame Frage, ob die Fotografie überhaupt ein künstlerisches Medium sei, inzwischen keine Relevanz mehr hat, ist die Grenze zwischen Fotografie im Bereich Freier Kunst und Design fließend geworden. Dies zeigt sich auch in der Schaffung einer neuen Professur für »künstlerische Fotografie.

I find the use of this term here a little unusual. Apparently, it is supposed to mean something like "Schwerpunktfach"? From the context, it would seem to mean something like "program"?

I was also wondering whether a person could use this to mean "major"?

e.g. His major at the University of Heidelberg was German.
Sein Schwerpunkt war Deutsch.
