Dutch term or phrase: die pas met het met de stoel naar boven komen, terug mee
Dear colleagues,

I am grammatically puzzled.

Zolang de gravers beneden zijn, moet deze bedieningspeer binnen hun bereik beneden blijven hangen; de laatste graver neemt die pas met het met de stoel naar boven komen, terug mee.

Is this (the second part) grammatically really (Dutch) Dutch? Should it not be sth like 'de laatste graver neemt die terug mee (pas) als hij met de stoel naar boven komt.'

Thank you in advance for your help!

Explanation:
Hi,

Grammatically, this is correct. In fact it says "de laatste graver neemt die terug mee op het ogenblik dat hij met de stoel naar boven komt."

I would indeed formulate it differently, such as "de laatste graver neemt deze ("de bedieningspeer") terug mee wanneer hij met de stoel naar boven komt."

Explanation:
this is not correct Dutch (I suppose it's Flemish because of the "terug mee", but still ungrammatical). something is missing.

probably they mean something like this:

de laatste graver neemt die pas mee terug (naar boven) (samen) met het (something's missing here; "team dat" perhaps?) met de stoel naar boven komt.

it says "komen", but because of "samen met HET ..." that verb should have been singular. the sentence is basically rubbish imo, not just because something is missing...

Asker: I am the most grateful for your answer Ron.... I have seen your answer just after I have commented on Steven's remark. Your answer is exactly what was in my mind. I can split the sentence and understand it when I think German but I have never heard a Dutch making such a composition.

disagree  Steven Mertens: Hi Ron, it is indeed grammatically correct, but nor a Flemish nor a Dutch would formulate it like that. It only leads to confusion

-> you are completely right - I didn't read it properly. nothing is missing. (but the author of this sentence is not going to win any literature prizes soon...)

neutral  vixen: I agree that the sentence is rubbish, but there's nothing missing; see my discussion entry ;-)

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Steven, Thank you for your answer. I think my question was formulated a bit wrongly. Grammatically ok, but is it a normal sentence or would you rather make a sentence as you formulated above or like what I said above Should it not be sth like 'de laatste graver neemt die terug mee ('pas als' of 'op het ogenbik dat') hij met de stoel naar boven komt Could you please comment on this too?

agree  vixen: It took me a while to see how this sentence could be correct, but you are right. It does seem to be a Flemish text, though.

-> Thans Vixen, the sentence is indeed rubbish and should never be formulated like that, but grammatically, it is perfect :-)
