English to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / literature | | English term or phrase: what is Ajax here? | Here the term in the sentence confused me like this:" She sat there and finished her tea and thought of what she thought of , memory traces and flary images and a friend she missed and all the shadow-dappled stuff of an undividable moment on a normal morning going crazy in ways so humanly routine you can't even stop and take note except for Ajax she needs to buy and the birds behind her, rattling the metal frame of the feeder."
What's "Ajax" here?
Thank you! |

| | A brand of cleanser | Explanation: Ajax is a brand of cleanser. I've usually used the powdered type. It's for scrubbing sinks and tubs mainly.

Here's a website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(cleanser)
Ajax cleanser (or Ajax brand cleanser with bleach) is a powdered household and industrial cleaner introduced by Colgate-Palmolive in 1947. Its slogan was "Stronger than dirt!", a reference to the mythical character Ajax. The slogan would be used again for its Ajax Laundry Detergent, when introduced in the early-1960s, with an armed knight riding a white horse. In addition, a widely mocked commercial in the late-1970s/early-1980s declared, "Armed...with Ajax!" In the UK character actress Ann Lancaster appeared on the "It cleans like a white tornado" television advertisements.

Ajax can be referring to the powdered cleanser or the laundry detergent. In any case, it's a cleaning agent....And, a good one, too! :-) |
