English term or phrase: sentence understanding
The sentence confused me like this:" She cleaned and filled the bird feeders, shaping the day around a major thing with all its wrinkles and twists, its array of swarming variations."

What she wants to do? What is the "shaping the day around a major thing with all its wrinkles and twists, its array of swarming variations."

Thank you!

English translation:she made her world turn around the major thing
Explanation:
" shaping the day around a major thing" - she made her world turn around the major thing (bird feeding); "with all its wrinkles" - "wrinkles" symbolize "seriosness" in English and mean "with all its necessities" (like - walking to the bank to pay bills); "and twists" - sticky situations, which have a twist and require your response (there's a saying:" that situation has a twist"); "its array of swarming variations" - a mosaic of numerous little events that that day could bring;
I've read some irony in the words of the author there as well, but I wouldn't call it "irony", it's more of a touching sympathy towards this woman, who feels responsible for the wellbeing of her little creatures.

she concentrated her time in doing one central thing/ask paying attention to all the details

Explanation:
I don't know if cleaning the bird feeders is the central thing or if it was a larger task (for instance, cleaning and putting everything in order). The "wrinkles and twists" and "its array of swarming variations" are all the details surrounding the work, one thing leading to another. "swarming" is used to describe what ants and bees do. It suggests a seemingly never ending, dynamic activity.

Sorry it should be "task", not "ask".

organizing the day around one main task

Explanation:
She kept busy by concentrating on one main task per day (= cleaning the bird feeder for example), even if it was a mundane thing, and it seems that's what most of these things were, with all the the smaller and bigger subtasks (wrinkles) and forseeable and unforeseeable turns and consequences (twists), and .

.. the many varying activities and experiences (swarming variations) that come with the main task - although this last part seems to rather point to many different events during a day in general. Not a very logical sentence.

"Swarming variations" is an attempt to relate the language to bird vocabulary.

agree  Joyce A: I think "organizing the day around the main task" makes sense. But, I think "swarming variations" refers to all the busy variations as in the "busy as a bee" kind. :-)

She cleaned and filled the....

Explanation:
She keeps her mind occupied by working on the bird feeders. While she completes the task she sorts her thoughts and plans her day considering all the various options and avenues open to her. The 'major thing' with its 'swarming variations' is the problem that is bothering and overwhelming her.
