English term or phrase: was a thousand times a fool
The sentence so confused me like that:" She was a thousand times a fool. She moved toward the door and was a fool this way and that but not in her room, driving past AUTO DODY and NEW USED, with wood stacked in canvas and sailcloth, because that's where Rey was intact, in his real dody, smoke in his hair and clothes."

The sentence cited from novel "Body Artist" by Don Delillo.

I wonder how to understand " a thousand a fool" and "... was a fool this way and that but not in her room,"

in her room she was usually not a fool
Explanation:
She was a thousand times a fool. (In a thousand times and a thousand places) She moved toward the door and was a fool this way (was a fool in moving toward the door) and that but not in her room (but in her room, which was her own place, she was not a fool)

The use of a thousand is a way of saying many, many, many.
I think the author is using "in her room" as a way of saying that there was one place where she was in control, where she was not a fool, and that place was her room.

She was just such a damned big fool all around

Explanation:
The thousand times a fool part is easy - it's just a metaphor. Coincidentally, you can also put it this way - word for word - in my native Russian. The rest of the text, however, doesn't strike me as particularly good English, and whatever the sentence you quoted means seems to be highly contextual. It's really hard to say without reading more.

the foolishness has increased by a thousand

Explanation:
implied that there is a person, not a thing, which is foolish. The foolishness. noun, has taken on a numerical value of a thousand; it could be more, or less, but implies a negative weight;
