English to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Automotive / Cars & Trucks / Not a translation phrase - a question about horsepower (HP) | | English term or phrase: Horsepower US / Horsepower UK/Europe | i am currently translating a piece about different vehicles, many of which were manufactured in Europe. The articles are bound for the US.
Can anyone please tell me if the US measurement for horsepower is the same as the UK/rest of Europe?
In other words, do I need to convert the HP quantities into a slightly different US measurement?
Thanks in advance for any useful replies |

Power and horsepower
Power is the capability of a machine or system to do work. Power is calculated as the rate of doing work in force by distance per unit time- in units like lb-ft/min (foot pounds per minute) or N-m/s (Newton meters per second, which is also called the Watt).
Several units of measurement of power are named horsepower, names like mechanical horsepower or imperial horsepower, metric horsepower, Royal Automobile Club (RAC) horsepower, or British tax horsepower, etc. The values of these units are slightly different and vary between 735.5 to 750 watts.
In a rotational movement, power is calculated from measured torque and rpm. In an engine, power is provided by a rotating shaft which at any rpm exerts a certain amount of torque on a load.

4 hrs confidence: | horsepower us / horsepower uk/europe horsepower and measurement methods
Explanation: A horse power is more or less 736-750 W
The most sigificant difference could come from the measurement methods:
- US SAE (UK similar), but there are multiple methods: raw, net, certified
- Europe DIN, but also ISO, ECE R24
Basically these methods may measure "engine only", or "engines with all accessories (exhaust, alternator, water pump if separate, cooling system, etc)

10 hrs confidence: | horsepower us / horsepower uk/europe defined as nearly the same
Explanation: I consulted two authoritative dictionaries.
Chambers 21st Century, published in the UK. "2 in the imperial system: the unit of power, replaced in the SI system [International System of Units] by the watt with one horsepower equal to 745.7 watts."
Webster's Third New International Dicationary, Unabridged. "...a standard unit of power equal in the U.S. to 746 watts and nearly equivalent to the English gravitational unit of the same name that equals 550 foot pounds of work per second."

Admittedly, this responds only to the U.S. and the U.K., but it may add some helpful clarification.
