a mechanism to restrict the range of movement of a moving part or assembly
Explanation:
As this is an automotive project, here is an another possible usage.

it could well refer to a part of a mechanism that resrtricts the range of motion of any moving mechanism in the car (eg. power window / sun roof etc.).

E.g. a sun roof can be opened or closed by a electronic control: Usually the "range of motion" would be controlled by a sensor that would sense when the sun roof reaches it fully open / fully closed position, but if the sensor fails, the motor will attempt to push it further. The "hard stop" would be a *physical* barrier to prevent the further movement of the sun roof.

I'm not saying that Thayenga is wrong, but I would lean towards my own explanation as the usage of "rear" along with "hard stop" seems to indicate the position the assembly as it is stopped. I don't think it makes sense if you are just talking about applying your brakes hard. I mean, a "stop" is a "stop" in that case ;-)

agree  Liz Broomfield: So a rear hard stop would involve the rear brakes rather than the front ones, I assume
