English term or phrase:be damaged
From a service manual.
"If there is not enough refrigerant in the A/C system, oil lubrication will be insufficient and the compressor may be damaged."
Is "may be damaged" correct?
Or should it be "may get damaged", "may damage".
For me it seems that, in that sentence, "may be damaged" implies that because the compressor is damaged, there will not be enough refrigerant and oil lubrication.
And I think the idea is that compressor will get damaged because there is not enough oil lubrication.
Please accept my apologies for any offence caused. However, I was not making a judgement based on your name about whether or not English was your mother tongue. I did think that it would have been difficult for the line of causality in the sentence to have been so thoroughly misunderstood by a native speaker of English and that was the reason for my mistake. However, I do think that the use of "and" could be confusing as it stands.
What you say is true, it could be that the sentence had already been translated and there may be more comprehension if it were turned around..."If the compressor is damaged, lubrication will be insufficient and there is not enough refrigerant in the A/C system." However, may be... or get ... damaged, are the same thing in my eye when reading the original sentence... ask to see if it was badly written to start with or if it was not correctly translated.
The phrase is correct... it may get damaged, but it will not necessarily be. It is correct and I think it is a preference in the phrasing, waanting not to be categorical, what if it is not damaged...?

damage [to the compressor] may result
Explanation: "may be damaged" is, as you suggest, ambiguous and could have either meaning.
