I’m translating into Polish a document outlining a company’s policy with respect to accounting for slow-moving, obsolete and defective inventory. The company is a large international chemicals and coatings manufacturer.

I somehow can’t make sense of the word ‘’affiliate’’ as used in the excerpt below.

‘’Raw Materials and Empty Packages

The following policy establishes the means for identifying, managing, and accounting for the losses/gains on inactive raw materials and empty packages.

· Review monthly Recoverable Assets Summary or similar *Affiliate report*.

· Purchasing shall be contacted to see if material can be used in another plant or returned to the supplier for credit.

· Specific accounts should be set up for each inventory category (e.g., raw materials, intermediates, etc.). The inventory category detail accounts should then be allocated to product lines according to usage patterns.’’

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The way I understand your text, the author is referring to the review of the "monthly Recoverable Assets Summary or similar *Affiliate report*."
The key word being "similar". In other words, any other similar, related or associated report.

I think there is a hint right under the sentence which you were talking about.

"Purchasing shall be contacted to see if material can be used in another plant or returned to the supplier for credit."

I think "another plant" means an affiliate company related to this large international chemicals and coatings manufacturer.

Therefore, regarding raw materials and empty packages, these are considered to be slow-moving, obsolete and defective inventory, and the company's policy is to make a monthly review that if there are other affiliate companies who could use these inventories at their plants or factories, the company could get rid of the inventories which are being a drag to them.

Because this term has become a widely used sales stratagem, I think that it is easy to confuse it with the literal meaning of the word, "affiliate," as a verb, (used with object.)

"Affiliate" is a term often assigned to a company that has sales and distribution rights to sell products for another company.

Internet sales companies very often set up an "affiliate" marketing plan, whereby the "affiliate," under specific contract terms with the manufacturer, sell and distributes software, or other products, on a separate website, or from a distribution location, from a wholly different business.

Offering "affiliate" sales programs broadens the sales capacity and reach of many companies wishing to sell outside their country borders, on the internet, or otherwise, with little to no cost to the mother company.

BUT, in reading and re-reading this example you have posted, I am inclined to think that the usage is a literal one, meaning the v. "affiliate" (used with object,) 'report' and or summary.

I have written all information about "affiliate" companies, in case somewhere else in the text you find evidence of separate entities filing reports, which would then change the meaning of this dramatically.
