This is from a text I am proofreadng. It is written in generally good English by a non-native, but there are one or two places where the Danish sentence structure clearly shows.

In other places the slightly odd formulations are carefully included from the jargon used in the subject matter, so even if they grate on my ear, they have to be left as they are, because that is how the global community expresses itself.

There is a lot of material on the Internet in many varieties of English, ranging from clear and lucid to plain awful...

My text is aimed at a European target group with US experience. We are writing organisation, analyse etc. and running the UK spellcheck because that is what the client and I use as default.

Within that register, I would definintely say set exam(ination) questions. But could there be some good reason for using derive instead?

Sorry if it is a stupid question, but I have no source text to refer back to, and after a tough week on several fronts I simply cannot decide! Thanks for any advice!
