Each spring, California students take a battery of standardized tests that comprise the state's STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) Program. The key component of the program measures students’ achievement of state academic content standards. The program began in 1998, but the tests the state has used have evolved over time. The assessments that made up the STAR program in 2008-09 include:

* California Standards Tests (CSTs)
* California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA)
* California Modified Assessment (CMA)
* Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS)
