English term or phrase: carpet time
the passage is from a contemporary american novel where the narrator, a primary school (third degree) student, summarizes a particular day at her school:
"Math problems, reading, carpet time, oil- pastel sky drawing
art project. Recess. Four square. Two points. Milk carton. History,
spelling. Lunch bell.
I spent lunchtime at the porcelain base of the drinking fountain,
which was half stopped up with pink gum, taking sip after
sip of the warm metallic water that pushed through old pipes
from plumbing built in the twenties, pouring rust and fluoride
into my mouth, trying to erase my peanut- butter sandwich."

this is the only place where the term occurs. can you please explain to me what is meant by carpet time, thanks!

English translation:time to leave desks and sit on the carpet for story time, singing or other group activites
Explanation:
When I was at school, carpet time was when we all had to sit on the carpet and either listened to a story, or sang songs. There may have been other activities, but the importance here is that the pupils leave their desks and gather on the carpet or a rug placed on the floor.

This is my experience of "carpet time", but may be interpreted by others in different way.

agree  Amel Abdullah: "Four square" is a playground game that is commonly played by children in the U.S. during recess time. This Wikipedia article describes a much more advanced version than what a young child would typically play: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_square
