spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce

Explanation:
Tomato sauce can refer to a simple can of "sauced" tomatoes (i.e. no other ingredients except for the tomato, in which case this would definitely be a very unappetizing spaghetti sauce.) You can also have a can or jar of already flavored spaghetti sauce which is labelled tomato sauce. In this case, they are the same.

However, when distinguishing between the two I would say the tomato sauce is simply pureed tomato and the spaghetti sauce has other things added to it such as chopped onion, garlic, salt, italian flavorings, etc (sometimes meat).

If you aren't sure that is definitely spaghetti sauce, you can use "tomato sauce" and you should be fine. Spaghetti sauce implies tomato sauce has been altered to be more yummy on spaghetti.

Example sentence(s):
  • The linguini needs a little spaghetti sauce and then it\'ll be perfect.
  • Recipe: Take one can of Hunt\'s Tomato Sauce and put in pan. Add one cup of chopped onion, one clove fresh squeezed garlic, 1 tsp oregano and salt and pepper to taste.
