English term or phrase: decisions do not come easy/easily?
Hello, everyone!
Please, tell me which is correct: The decision to write this book did not come easy to us OR The decision to write this book did not come easily to us?
I prefer the first sentence, but not 100% sure

Would it be similar to 'words don't come easy' or is it from another opera?
Thanks in advance!

definitely "easily" (if you want your writing to be grammatically correct)
Explanation:
In this case, COME is not a linking verb.

"Decisions are not easy" uses the adjective since you are using a linking verb.
"Decisions don't come easily" uses an adverb because it is modifying the verb "come"

agree  Allison Wright: In speech, many native English people seem too lazy to utter two extra syllables to be grammatically correct, even though most know "easily" is the correct form when used adverbially. Sigh. One reason you hear it often.
