I would be very grateful for any hints about the word "nominations". What exactly is it here?

being selected as worthy of special praise
Explanation:
The expressions "Tutor Group" and "Autumn Term" show that this refers to a school in the UK.

"Tutor group" is what used to be called a "class" or "form": it is the group to which a school student in the UK basically belongs, although he or she may be taught particular subjects in different groups:

"A tutor group is a term used in UK schools , broadly equivalent to the United States term "homeroom". The term is most frequently used in Secondary schools where students may be taught in a number of different groupings throughout the day. Tutor groups are usually the group with which a student is registered at the beginning or end of each school session."

"Nominations" can have more than one meaning. Students may be nominated by their fellow students as representatives on some school committee, for example. Here, however, I think it must refer to the system which operates in many UK schools, whereby teachers nominate -- select and put forward -- a student in each group they teach as worthy of particular praise, for academic achievement or some other merit.

"At the end of each term all staff will nominate at least one student in each of their teaching groups, who has made a stand out contribution, whether it be academic, effort or any other appropriate reason."
[...]
Rewards will also be awarded for the following:
 100% Attendance
 Students on or above target
 Student Learning Leader Nominations
 Head of House Nominations
Student within the Tutor Group who has the most nominations
 The Tutor Group who has received the most nominations overall"
http://www.school-portal.co.uk/GroupDownloadFile.asp?GroupId...

"The STAR scheme was designed to enable subject staff to nominate students for special praise for achievement, exceptional improvement, service to the school, involvement in activities, promoting the school, assisting staff, and so on. Nominations are passed to the appropriate head of year via the form tutor. Five points are added to the tutor group's incentive points total and a certificate is awarded."

"The student who achieves most best worker nominations in each tutor group is Pupil of the Week."

for being nominated to receive a prize

Explanation:
I presume this is like Oscar nominations, that the student has been nominated by either his peers in the tutor group or the tutor, to get a prize, the most times out of the group.

Does that make sense? Nominated = put forward rather than being voted for.

A political party will nominate a candidate to run in an election, for example.
