English to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general)
English term or phrase: to back
Context:

"To remove the worn vlier pin, loosen the jam nut with a 1/2” wrench and back the vlier pin out of the block."

I was thinking quite a time why 'back' is used here, but then I got an idea. Let's look at the situation closer:

This flier pin means the same as 'spring-loaded pin'. And if you just, whistling away, screw off the nut, all the things will fly, according to the Murphy's law, into the most inaccessible places when the nut comes loose. So I think that 'back' here means approximately: "while screwing off the nut back-support the pin, and when loose, take it out."

English translation:to back out
Explanation:
I think it's a parsing issue: it is an instruction to "back (the pin) out", i.e. remove it in the opposite direction to the way it had originally been inserted. In the same sense as backing a car out of a parking space.

It is difficult to tell without knowing the exact composition of this vlier-pin, but apparently 'back' here just means screwing it out.

to cause to move backward or in a reverse direction

Explanation:

These are the relevant dictionary definitions. I would only add that the phrase "to back out" also can imply to move backwards carefully -- probably because of the frequent use of the term with cars. When you back out of a parking spot, or in other ways back out a car, you are frequently moving out in a way that you must be careful.

back
v.tr.
1. To cause to move backward or in a reverse direction: Back the car up and then make the turn.

v.intr.
1. To move backward: backed out of the garage.
2. To shift to a counterclockwise direction. Used of the wind.

There are also many google hits on "back the studs out," which may be relevant to the idea in your text.

Vlier is a manufacturer - maybe it is a quick release pin (see URL below) - so "back" mans push the release button back. In any case, it depends on which product of Vlier is all about.
