English term or phrase: one unit
Specifications for background and protection area around the symbol (protection area) are defined in the Corporate Design Manual of the xxx and are strictly to be met as follows: The symbol shall be displayed only on a white background. Around the accreditation symbol, there should be a free white space (protection area) of at least one unit (12 pt squared). The protection areas are integrated in the files of the accreditation symbol so that when positioning the files in other layouts the proper protection area would automatically be generated. In the event of scaling the symbol (i.e. enlarged or reduced), the protection area around the symbol would scale accordingly.

I could not understand wee this "one unit".
Does this mean 12 points x 12 points space?

Thank you for your help.

English translation:12pt x 12pt
Explanation:
That´s what it seems to mean - "12pt squared". I´m not sure if this is a standard unit of some kind or one created by the person defining the presentation of the symbol.

one unit= the single line spacing

Explanation:

- one unit of spacing

in my opinion he means there should be a white space around the symbol equivalent to "a single line space" ie 12 pts

to clarify the idea from another perspective:
the author defined a unit which is a white square with an area of 12X12 pts, and that square (the one unit) is repeated all around the symbol, to form the protective frame around it.

other info related to 12 points:
- Pica; the standard column width is 12 points.
- The default single line spacing is normally 12 points.
*** could be the basis on which 'one unit' is defined

disagree  B D Finch: Single line spacing is not necessarily 12pts, and the measurement for what is to be considered a unit (horizontal and vertical) is given in the text. Of course it's the margins and it is perfectly well expressed.

-> unless the symbol is meant to be very small, 12X12 pts is too tiny to represent the total area in my opinion, proly it is the thickness of the protection margin around the symbol, just a not so lucky expression.
