pope’s bank the bank of the Pope Explanation: the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church as well as the Head of State of the Vatican. Those people were referring to the Bank of Italy (Italy's central bank) as the Bank of the Pope (or the bank of the Vatican), presumably because of the great influence the Vatican has traditionally head on Italian domestic affairs. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 9 mins (2009-02-14 11:38:39 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Sorry, there's a typo: I meant "... has traditionally had..." |
