English term or phrase: During the last year
Hi all, I hope I was right to post this question as kudoz and not as a thread in the forum, since it's not a terminology issue but an English language usage one.
I am writing a letter for a job application (not related to translation) and I have encountering some problems to express time. I would like to hear from English native speakers their impressions about the following.
What I want to say is that from month X in 2010 to month Y in 2011 (without being so specific) I have worked in a field, but not all the time.

"Over the last year I (have) worked as" seems to me to express a period which is not finished, and in fact I found most examples with the verb in the present perfect, so it would imply something not only continuous but still ongoing.
"In the last year I worked as" does give the idea of something finished, but I am afraid it would be interpreted as something which took all the year, which is not the case.
"During the last year" looks like the best option to me, however I am asking you if it could be understood as the previous "in the last year I worked as" and what tense should follow to give the right idea or if you have better solutions to express what I want to say.

Thank you!

during the past year
Explanation:
The **last** year could be the last year of something in particular, e.g. the last year of your time with a company might have been five years ago. The **past** year is the year immediately preceding the time of the statement.

"During" can be understood as covering only part of the time.

neutral  B D Finch (meets criteria): That would sound as though it was continuous, rather than on and off.
29 mins
-> She would have to clearly state what she hard done after the date, adequately noting "on several occasions," etc.

neutral  cmwilliams (meets criteria): It's not absolutely clear but I get the impression that the time is completed. If so, the past tense is required.
1 hr
-> Not necessarily. Since /During the last year (both optional but a date makes it clearer over the time a potential employer may retain the document) I have X, Y, and Z, stated as accomplishments. It's standard and correct.

agree  Jack Doughty (meets criteria): and with perfect tense: "I have worked".

-> Thanks Jack. Yes, agree with the point about tense.

agree  Sheila Wilson (meets criteria): I'm not sure it would be a problem in this context, but certainly the possibility of confusion exists, so "past" is perhaps better

during the last year
Over the last 12 months

Explanation:
Over the last 12 (or however many) months, I have worked as A for X months and as B for Y months.

Maybe this would help if the periods overlap the calendar years.

neutral  B D Finch (meets criteria): Though I think the meaning is right, the register isn't. It is too discursive. e.g. Over the last/past 12 months we have got to know each other.

during the last year
periodically during the past year

Explanation:
because you have mentioned the phrase "but not all the time", you should add the word "periodically" to your sentence.

past is ok but what about the phrase "but not all time"? That's why "periodically" should be inserted.
