English translation:praing that things will go right for them...
Explanation:
I don't think this is a recognized expression, I think the author made it up as his headline for the article.
...rather than just going through the motions of being religious by telling beads
(Do Muslims do that? I thought it was a Roman Catholic thing)

agree  eLena Mishenkova: I think, you put it right. Their prays are sincere and can't be simulated as bead-counting does. And, yes, Muslims do that; their beads have 108 pieces - each for one pray - for the whole day.

agree  Armorel Young: If you get to look at the actual article you see that this is actually the caption to a photo that shows a Muslim praying with a string of prayer beads draped over his fingers http://www.docstoc.com/docs/11811944/The_Economist_September...

agree  Mohamed Ghazal: They do, and eLena, their rosaries have 99 beads each (that represent the names of God, not 108)

Explanation:
I think your question word is "beady". It's a play-word. A subha (muslim rosary, it has 99 beads) is a helpful thing not in praying only, but in the moments of nervousness as well."Beady eyes" - are the eyes which watch something (a progression of events in this particular case) carefully and suspiciously. Both, "prayerful" and "beady", most likely, are about his facial expressions. The President, probably, smelt something fishy and its close proximity(danger/neusance) made him feeling very uncomfortable.
