English to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Human Resources | | English term or phrase: Theory burst | Do the Common Understanding exercise using the flipchart.
This icebreaker highlights the variation in the common understanding of words and the need for specific clear communication.
Pick 8-10 and write on flip chart prior to session.
Ask the trainees to individually put a percentage of how likely they think something will happen against each of these words.
Collectively ask the trainees for their answers for each word and write the
highest and lowest percentage against it on the flip chart.
When have gone through the list on the flip chart ask:
“What does this tell us?”
“What can we do to reduce this variation?”
These questions help lead onto the *theory burst*.
Get feedback from the group on what the exercise was about, what did it tell them?
What was the purpose of it ?!
Thank you! |

| | stage in group discussion where a theories/explantations are discussed | Explanation: Theory burst is used in education of groups as a stage after individual idea or opinions are collected.
After the individuals see or hear the ideas or opinions of others then there is the state of "theory burst" -- meaning a discussion of what is the most truthful or best and clear idea/opinion/explanation that the group can then agree upon.
This discussion seems to be called a theory burst.

The programme will use action and experiential learning with short theory bursts, and readings, to help make sense of reality. We will use case studies, small group exercises, working in pairs and action learning sets to facilitate learning. The aim is to enable group members to learn effectively with and from each other.
