English term or phrase: cool it / dig it
The preacher said that the white man can't cool it because he has never dug it. I am trying to dig it. That's why I'm here.

(excerpt from a speech by Marlon Brando at the funeral of a Black friend who had been shot dead in a hate crime incident)

I don't understand this expression (if it's an expression). I can't seem to find any references online. Thanks for helping me.

stop/understand
Explanation:
cool it= calm down / stop (doing something)
dig it=understand (something)

I am pretty sure 'to dig it' meant 'to understand' in the 60s
Some people still say 'do you dig'? meaning: 'are you with me?' 'Do you know what I mean?'

So in this context it could be:
"The preacher said that the white man can't STOP because he has never UNDERSTOOD. I am trying to UNDERSTAND. That's why I'm here.

this makes some sense (at least to me!) when talking about hate crimes against black people.

agree  Carol Gullidge: I was around then, and "digging" meant "liking", as in "Dig that!", or "I really dig him". Don't remember it having any other meaning, but cd be wrong!
