English term or phrase:Idiomatic expression of an awkward style
Help, for the sake of the beauty of the English language, is there an English idiom that indicates "a writing style that is rough, unrefined, awkward to the audience". I'm having a translator's block at the moment.
Explanation: This feels to me like a case for inventing a picturesque metaphor
"a writing style like that of a monkey on a typewriter" (that probably goes a bit too far); "with about as much polish as a rusty nail"; "with the refinement of a pianist in boxing gloves"; "with all the style of a gawky heffalump", or whatever.
Here it is: "Mr. “Construction” was from the South – a region where everyone was known to have a writing style that was "[TERM]" - could gain the admiration of a “scholar-autocrat”.

Thanks a lot, everyone. A rich learning experience and a chance to rack one's brains.
The updates to the menu were made to make the site easy and more intuitive for visitors. Obviously, like any change, this may take a few days to get used to.
The dropdown menus have been divided into two-dimensional panels with similar items grouped together under headings. This eliminates scrolling for those with smaller screens, and also improves readability.
Mouseover your name at the top of the screen. Here you will find information about your account, your email settings, and more. The "My ProZ.com" menu was moved up here to simplify the main navigation, and to keep all of this type of information together.
