English to English translations [Non-PRO] Idioms / Maxims / Sayings / general | | English term or phrase: before the judge | "They had been the same height before the judge."
What does "before the judge" mean in the above sentence? It's about a newly-wed couple and there is no judge of course.
Thanks in advance

| | whey they appeared in front of the judge to be married | Explanation: I believe I found the text within which this sentence occurrs. The wife is a demon who is causing the husband's body to shrink.
Despite many of the supernatural elements of the short story, I am quite sure that the judge part is an allusion to the marriage ceremony. Marriages can be performed by clergy licensed to perform the legal ceremony. When the major is not performed by clergy, it can be performed by a judge, or a justice of the peace, or other licensed individuals.
Given that this refers to a marriage between a human and a demon, it would probably be difficult to find a member of the clergy to perform the ceremony. So it would make sense that they went to a judge. |
