Research shows that it is indeed an uncommon expression, but my dictionary does give "the cars are shoehorned into tiny spaces" as an example of usage in the context of a car-park.
The idea it is conjuring up is that you fill the available space (the book in this context), then you use a shoehorn so that you can push in one or two more. |
